She’s always played it safe…

College junior Lucy Washington abides by one rule—avoid risk at all costs. She’s cautious in every aspect of her life, from her health, to her mock trial team, to the boring guys she dates. When a brash, gorgeous jock walks into the campus coffeeshop and turns his flirt on, Lucy is stunned by the force of attraction. For the first time ever, she’s willing to step out of her comfort zone, but can she really trust the guy who’s determined to sweep her off her feet?

He’s always played around…

Entering his last year of college eligibility, linebacker Matthew "Matty" Iverson has the team captaincy in his sights. And it’s his for the taking, if he can convince his quarterback Ace Anderson to give up the starting position. Luckily, Matty already has an edge—the hottie he’s lusting over just happens to be Ace’s childhood best friend. Getting Lucy on his side and in his bed? Hell yeah. Matty is more than confident he can have both, but when he falls hard for Lucy, it’s time for a new game plan: convince the woman of his dreams that she’s not sleeping with the enemy.

Having loved Jen's SACKED, the first book in the Gridiron series, I was super excited to get my hands on the next book! I didn't really remember Matty from the first one, so initially, I was a little worried that I would miss some key things about his character. That wasn't the case at all. It was so easy to jump right back into Western U and meet some fabulous new characters. We did get a bit of Knox, Ellie, and Jack from the previous book so that was nice to see too.

I really enjoyed Matty and Lucy together. I did feel it took quite a while to get things rockin' and rollin' for them and I do wish there was a bit more build up between them. I felt like I could have used a bit more flirtatious interaction, instead of seeing them apart trying to figure out what to do about the other. Lucy is pretty against dating Matty, and she doesn't really decide to jump in with both feet until midway through the book. I do like that their relationship wasn't rushed, but there were a few times where I felt like the book dragged a bit trying to get to that point. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a major issue for me, but something I did notice. These two have serious chemistry and I love how passionate and vulnerable they are with one another. It definitely made me jealous!

Matty is a good guy who likes to have fun. He's a starting linebacker and after winning the championship last year, has the world at his feet. He can get any girl he wants and has, up until he meets Lucy one day in the coffee shop where she works. At first he brushes it off, but it's evident she made an impression on him. which leads to his eventual pursuit of her. I liked how direct he was and how he managed to win her over.

I have to mention the communication. I LOVE it when couples actually communicate instead of letting their problems blow up! Lucy ends up finding something she shouldn't in Matty's possession, and when he found her upset, he wouldn't let her go until they talked it out. There is another issue later, but it's not a case of miscommunication, but more of a 'I need to guard my heart' moment. That's what I love about Jen's books. The communication is present and the drama is relatively low. That's not to say there isn't conflict, because there is, but it's handled so well.

We got to really see a lot of Hammer, Matt's best friend and fellow defensive player, and he was a great addition. I can't wait to meet the girl that tames him! Hah. It should be quite an entertaining read! I have to mention Ace as well, since so much of the book revolves around his character. Ace is Lucy's childhood best friend, but I really found myself disliking the guy because of how he acted with Lucy. I remember having guy best friends and not one of them would pull the crap Ace did with her. I realize that she is tied to her childhood loyalty for him, but I was really exasperated by him for the majority of the book. He pulls a lot of uncool shit and there was one scene that I wanted to jump in the book and give him a good ass kicking for what he did. I get that Ace is going through a rough time because of his future with the team, but that does not give him a free pass to be a jerk. Thankfully, Lucy does hold him accountable and she doesn't just ignore the way he treated her. He does find a bit of redemption in the end, but it's safe to say he is not a favorite of mine.

Overall, this was a fun read and I am looking forward to more books in this series. You really can't go wrong with football, romance, and humor!

  1. Matty was so swoony, wasn't he? I loved how he chased after her. :)
Ace got real annoying real fast. I don't know if I want to read a book about him to be honest. If Jen does write him a book, the boy has some major redeeming to do in my eyes! I agree with what you had to say about communication! It drives me bat-shit crazy when couples don't communicate, so I was glad that these two did. I LOOOVED Hammer. That guy is a riot! I'm really really hoping his book is next! :)
    Lovely review, Jess!

  2. I've been hearing great things about this book. I haven't read this series, but I am thinking I out to. And yay for couples actually communicating with each other, am I right?

  3. Yay for communication! Nothing makes me crazier than when characters don't talk to each other. This sounds like a good series. Great review!

  4. Though you wished there was more of a build up between them and that the book felt like it did drag some, I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I was definitely interested in picking it up and I just love the sound of the characters :)
