The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away.

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

Being a huge fan of K.A.'s Ten Tiny Breaths series, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book! I love K.A.'s writing style, as well as the storylines and characters she creates. I really enjoyed the fact that this book is written in dual POV AND dual time lines. We get Jesse's POV in the past and we get Water's in the present. I love how seamlessly these transitions were! At no point did I feel confused or irritated with the back and forth in time. The story is pretty linear- there were no major twists and turns in this one. We know what happens from the beginning, but we get to go back and see how the characters got to that point. I actually liked this method of storytelling. Even though we know what happens, the build up of the backstory was still intense and exhilarating!

What happened to Water is absolutely horrifying. She wakes up in the hospital after a brutal attack with no memory of who she is or what happened to her. Her recovery process is a slow one, but Dr. Alwood and her daughter Amber do their best to befriend her and make her feel comfortable. Still, Water can't help but feel lost and alone. I was heartbroken for Water. She has survived a horrific ordeal and has lost so much more than her memory.

Water has nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Thankfully Dr. Alwood introduces her to Ginny Fitzgerald, her reclusive next door neighbor, who lives on a horse farm. Ginny ends up taking in Water and let her live in a upstairs apartment. The two become good companions for one another and I love how Water helped Ginny come out of her reclusive shell and open her back up to the world again. It was such a beautiful, hopeful side storyline and I'm really glad Tucker developed it the way she did.

Water finds herself attracted to Jesse, Dr. Alwood's rebellious black sheep son. He has not had the best relationship with his father, who happens to be the sheriff of their small town. Ginny believes Jesse to be a bad egg and won't let him step one foot on her property. I loved Jesse's character. He isn't at all the bad boy Ginny pegs him to be. Instead, he is kind and sweet, and Water can't help but be drawn to him. There is a familiarity there between them and she just feels comfortable with him. He was put in an impossible situation before and I feel he did the only thing he could. He is guided by his heart and he is determined to do what's right and stand by those he loves.

I was so grateful that Water has found a place in the small Oregon town with Jesse, his family, Ginny, and even Dakota (the girl Water works with). They are such a support system for her and I'm glad she didn't have to be alone in her days following her recovery. In true Tucker fashion, this story will pull at your heart strings, but it will also really make you appreciate good men like Jesse Welles, who would risk everything for love.
