The Monday Musts: The Girl of Fire and Thorns series, Hamilton the Musical, and Lin Manuel Miranda

By 7:00 AM

The Monday Musts is a new weekly meme I started and will be doing instead of Music Monday. This way I can combine my love of music to fit better with my book blog.

Thank you to Tonya for making me the above graphic to go with my new meme! <3

I would love for others to join me in doing The Monday Musts! I have included a Linky at the end of my post, so please share your Monday Musts!

It's super easy to do. What is a must read book? What album/song/artist is a must listen? And finally what has caught your eye that is a must see? (Can be ANYTHING. Other blogs, bookish things, pictures, etc.)

This week's MUSTS:

Must Read:

If you have not already read the Fire and Thorns trilogy, it's time to get on that! I absolutely ADORE this series and Danielle reminded me of how much after she posted one of my favorite quotes on her Facebook this past week.

"I love you the way a drowning man loves air. And it would destroy me to have you just a little."

Elisa has one of the best character development arcs I have ever seen in a series and it is so worth it to see her go from the girl she was in the first book to the strong, resilient woman in the final one. I will mention that the first book was the weakest of the three, but it was still enjoyable. The second and third blew me away!

Must Listen:

Artist: The Original Broadway Cast Recording
Album: Hamilton: An American Musical
Favorite Tracks: Alexander Hamilton, Wait For It, Guns and Ships, Dear Theodosia, Non-Stop, Take a Break, The Room Where it Happens, Burn, It's Quiet Uptown, The World Was Wide Enough, Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story

I wasn't going to feature this as my Must Listen, but seeing as I have literally not listened to ANY OTHER form of music this past week, I felt like it would be wrong not to feature it. I completely blame Teresa for this newfound obsession because she featured Hamilton as her Must listen last week. I also blame Jen because she feeds my obsession as well. (Thank goodness I have you girls to fangirl with.)

At first I saw all the talk on Twitter and I just kind of ignored it because I thought the whole notion was ridiculous. Until I sat down to listen. Being a huge musical theater fan, I don't know why I didn't give it a chance sooner than I did. It doesn't matter. Because I waited for it, my world was wide enough to listen, and that would be enough.

This is the song I played for my students and I actually got a pretty good response.

Must See:

So, some of you may have seen that over the last week I have become absolutely OBSESSED with Hamilton the Musical. (See above!) I obviously had to like the Hamilton FB page and came across these #Ham4Ham videos that Lin Manuel Miranda makes. (He is HILARIOUS.) He played the Loud Hailer in this past week's Les Miserables and I just love watching how excited he is!

  1. Must... resist... the pull of Hamilton. I don't even know why I'm trying so hard to avoid it, but I am. But the more I see, the more interested I am. Ack! I'm glad you're loving it though!

  7. I have that first book in your must read on my Kindle I'm pretty sure but I've always been sort of "meh" about starting it. It's good to know before I actually give it a try that you were more into the 2nd and 3rd books so if I'm still meh after finishing I won't just scrap it all together.

I already know ALL about your Hamilton obsession haha and I somehow KNEW that was going to be your pick. I've gone and read up on the wiki like you told me and it did help and your right the "soundtrack" if you will is brilliant. Though I'm with you I am in love with musical theater and things of that nature. Loving it!

As for that video it WAS funny but then I went to the actual YouTube page and I found the one he did with Jimmy Fallon with the musical impressions and laughed even harder. Ugh damn you woman for making me dive into all these black time suck holes!

    1. Yes. Push on even if you don't LOVE the first book. Because the romance is just so OMFG good. Hahah, it felt wrong to pick something other than Hamilton. I have not listened to ANYTHING else in a week. Unless you count Grease Live last night. I ALMOST featured that Jimmy Fallon video! But then I saw him being all fanboying in Les Mis and couldn't help it. LOL.

  8. I think I need to give into the whole Hamilton thing already! In an ideal world I wouldn't until I could see it but that won't be for a very long time I am sure!!

    1. Same Grace! I would have liked to see the musical first, but alas, I do not live in NY and don't know when I'll be able to get there. I do hope their tour comes near me.

  10. Now you have me super curious about the Fire and Thorns trilogy. I'm pretty sure I have the first book somewhere, so I'll have to bump it up on my TBR. And I need to check out Hamilton. I kept seeing people talking about it on Twitter and I was like 'what is it, is it a band, a person, what's going on??' haha. I swear at least half my feed is about Hamilton 24/7!
