She's living her dream...

Kylie Ryans is the biggest thing to come out of Nashville since, well, since Trace Corbin. With a hit album and a powerful label behind her, she appears to be the girl who has it all.

But appearances can be deceiving.

Fresh out of rehab, Trace Corbin is ready to take on the world. Just not the girl he walked away from. Because if there's one thing he knows for certain, it's that the people you love are the ones who have the power to destroy you.

As their worlds collide, they'll have to make the ultimate choice. Follow their dreams, or give it all up for love.

They say love conquers all, but for Kylie and Trace, it just might wreck everything they've worked for.

Kylie Ryans may be living her dream, but as we can see from the very first pages- she isn't really living at all....

The highly anticipated conclusion to the Kylie Ryans series is finally here! And let me say- it did NOT disappoint. After the heartbreaking ending to Girl on Tour, I was more than ready to find out what would happen next for Kylie and Trace. Their journey together has been a rollercoaster ride- filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. While it may have caused my emotions to go into overload, it was worth every moment and every heartbreak. One of the greatest things about this series is Quinn's character development. I started out the series enjoying Kylie's spunky, feisty, heart-on-her-sleeve attitude and I couldn't stand Trace's arrogance and how he could jerk her back and forth. However, as the story progressed, I found myself falling for Trace (just a bit later than everyone else!). He is definitely a complex character. You really have to peel through his layers to discover the man he really is, but once you do- oh it's worth it!

In Girl in Love, my heart ached for both Kylie and Trace as both are have been hurt by the other and have to decide how to forge ahead when their paths eventually cross. Kylie is a shell of the girl we met in Girl With Guitar. No longer bright eyed and bushy-tailed- Kylie has known true heartbreak and sorrow and has given everything her heart could possible give. She is completely numb to the world and throws herself into her music. Her friends are concerned for her and see right past her 'everything is fine' façade. It was very hard to see Kylie this way!

Trace had to make a big decision concerning his well being, and while he may have handled it poorly concerning Kylie, he thought he was doing what was best for all involved. Now, after seeking the help he needs to battle his addiction, he is ready to continue his music. As fate throws him and Kylie back together, the big question remains: can the two find their way back to each other and finally have their happily ever after or is there too much pain and betrayal to overcome?

After months of separation, Kylie finds she is still not unaffected by Trace Corbin. Seeing him hurts and knowing that he may be with someone else absolutely shatters her. As much as she tries to move forward, he is always at the forefront of her mind, drawing her back in. Kylie is one stubborn girl in this book and I found myself really frustrated with her. However, Trace frustrated me just as equally! He knows what needs to be said if he ever has a shot at getting his girl back and yet he ends up protecting his own heart by making jokes and teasing her when that's the last thing she needs to hear. But, Trace really speaks through his actions and we see how much he loves Kylie on so many occasions because of what he does and how he is there for her.

Since Kylie and Trace's road has been so wrought with its ups and downs, I believe the two have gained a deeper appreciation of love and how it should never be taken for granted. There are some people you can live without, but there are some people you don't WANT to live without. Kylie and Trace have not been truly happy in more than a year and when they both remember back to when they were happiest- it was with one another. Sometimes the best kind of love is the one you have to fight to hell and back for and that is what Trace and Kylie did.

Girl in Love wouldn't be complete without discussing the role of its side characters. Steven, Mia, Lulu, Hannah, Mike, and Gretchen all play such pivotal roles in the lives of our two main characters. I confess, I had a hard time liking Steven because I knew he was no replacement for Trace. I am glad Quinn took that storyline in the direction she did, because Kylie and Steven were better suited as just friends. Lulu and Mike (a member of Trace's band) had some great quality time with Kylie and I really liked watching them together. Kylie needs her friends to keep her grounded and I loved how they weren't afraid to give it to her straight no matter what. Mia also falls in this category. I was prepared to hate Mia from the last book, but she ended up being a much better friend to Kylie than I ever would have thought. Gretchen is back also, but in what capacity, well you'll have to read to find out!

Kylie and Trace have some pretty heavy decisions to make in this book and not just for their own relationship. Careers are at risk and Kylie and Trace both will have to choose the direction they want their lives to take- and if music will remain at the center of it all....

There are always two sides to every story . . .

His whole life, Jonah Whitecomb has strove to meet everyone’s expectations of him: the perfect student, dutiful son, loyal twin, accomplished surfer, and powerful Magical. But behind his carefully composed façade hides the truth of how his family has fallen apart, leaving Jonah more often than not feeling adrift. To complicate matters, he fell in love long ago with a girl in his dreams, one he’s never told anyone about, including his twin brother.

Just when life seems its bleakest, Jonah discovers that Chloe is real. Wanting to finally reach out and grab happiness for himself, he embarks on a journey to track down the girl of his dreams, only to find that happy endings aren’t always guaranteed, the best laid out plans can go horribly awry, and sometimes, you have to simply let yourself go along for the ride.

* Beyond Fate is Jonah’s point-of-view of the events of A Matter of Fate, and is a companion novella.*

My Review:

When I first read Heather was going to write novellas in both Jonah and Kellan's POV, I was ecstatic! The Fate series is one of my all-time favorites, so getting inside my boys' heads is something I've been looking forward to! It's no secret that I love both Whitecomb brothers. I've said it before, Heather has created such an intricate love triangle that makes choosing a "team" rather impossible. However, from the get-go, my heart tugs a bit more towards Jonah- I felt so much for him in A Matter of Fate and I really just wanted to see him happy. (Granted, I definitely didn't want to see Kellan unhappy, either.) With that being said, after reading both A Matter of Fate and A Matter of Heart, these books have left me in a state of emotional turmoil. I honestly don't know that I've ever felt SO strongly about characters in a book and what happens to them.

I LOVED reading Jonah's POV of some of the events that happened in the first book A Matter of Fate. I especially love that Heather didn't just retell the same story. We got to see the events leading up to the first time the twins met Chloe and we really get to see some of the secondary relationships in a new light.

I knew that the twins and their father weren't close, but gosh. I had no idea just how strained of a relationship it really was. And it broke my heart. To blame your own sons for your wife's death? That's just reaching an all time low. Thankfully, Jonah and Kellan are close to their uncle, as well as their neighbor Astrid. Still, to have your own father resent you.... It takes a toll on the twins, whether they admit it or not. Astrid has always been there for the boys and seeing her interact with them is really heartwarming. Their uncle, Joey, was the one who would take the guys surfing, thus creating a love for the ocean. Surfing is an escape for both Jonah and Kellan, and I really liked seeing the role it played in this novella.

Jonah has been dreaming about Chloe his whole life. Literally. From a young age, the two have been able to communicate via their dreams. He is in love with her and even though he is dating Callie, Chloe is never far from his mind. Finding out she actually exists for real and is his Connection (his soulmate), is a life-changing event for him. She is all he can think about and he will do whatever it takes to find her.

I actually felt bad for Callie. She really was innocent in all of this and still gets hurt by Jonah. She is in love with him, and while he loves her- it doesn't come remotely close to what he feels for Chloe. Seeing Jonah give her a crap excuse for breaking up, I don't blame her for continuing to call him and then eventually show up to see him demanding the truth. I wanted to hate Callie- but that really wouldn't be fair. Jonah knew all along what starting a relationship with her would do- and he decided to go ahead anyway. He hated hurting her- she had been his best friend before they ever became more, and this was not how he wanted things to go down.

After manipulating his father to move them across country to be closer to Chloe, Jonah couldn't be more ready to meet the girl of his dreams. However, things do not fall into place like he planned. Complications with his brother send Jonah spiraling back into his depression. Jonah and Kellan's relationship is probably the one that made my heart hurt the most. They have always shared everything with each other- being Emotionals, they can communicate without speaking, and as twins have that twin Connection that binds them together. However, Chloe is the one thing Jonah never shared with Kellan. He tried to tell him a few times when they were younger, but it wasn't taken seriously. Jonah could have avoided a lot of heartbreak, had he been honest with his twin up front.

“When you fall in love with somebody, you shouldn’t have to share them and that feeling they inspire in you, not even with your twin brother.”

However, Jonah wanted one thing to be his own. One thing he shouldn't have to share with anyone. Chloe is HIS dream. I can't imagine what it's like with them. Watching their relationship deteriorate tore at my heart because they are brothers and it's been them against the world for so long.

Jonah is such a complex character who does not open up and wear his feelings on his sleeve. He is filled with so much self doubt and pain- and I just wanted him to be happy!

Gah. My heart hurts again over-thinking and over-analyzing this. I mean it when I say I'm going to need to mentally and emotionally prepare for the third book in the series A Matter of Truth, releasing November 5th. Meanwhile- pick this series up if you haven't already. As much as Heather puts you through the emotional ringer, her writing is beautiful, expressive, and is able to make you connect with her characters on a level I think no other author has.

~Let's Talk Music!~
by: Heather Lyons

Anyone who knows me is well aware that I’m a rabid music fiend. I listen to it all day long. I’m always building new playlists, downloading new songs, talking about music to friends (and, let’s face it, strangers, too), and going to see my fave bands live. So, it probably comes as no surprise that I’m quite particular and a wee bit fanatical about the songs I listen to while writing. Finding the right music to create a book to is a critical part of my writing process.

Today, I want to share with you fifteen awesome songs from the Beyond Fate playlist. All of them, in some way, helped shaped scenes and characters—not necessarily via lyrics (although sometimes, that helped), but often simply in terms of how the songs made me feel.

While I’ve shared most of the songs that went into my playlist for Beyond Fate, I also wanted to dish a bit about a few of the more important ones.

1. Byegone by Volcano Choir. If there is ever a song that I’d consider to be the official theme song for Jonah’s POV, it’d be this one—as I said above, not so much due to the lyrics (because some of them don’t fit at all), but because of this song feels like Jonah to me.  I mean, I’ll never be able to listen to this song again without thinking of Jonah Whitecomb. And while I wrote a lot of the story to Byegone, the scene that this one matches perfectly is when he goes surfing at Mavericks for the first time.

            Door's wide open

You know what were saying ‘bout us now

He’s a legend

I’m a legend

And we both go tripping through the door

You know that we are northern now

2. Act on Impulse by We Were Promised Jetpacks. Jonah tries really hard to be exactly who everybody wants him to be, and there’s constantly a huge weight of responsibility settling on his young shoulders. Choosing to go after happiness for himself is a big gamble.

            We act alone

            We act on impulse

3. Sheets by Damien Jurado. I remember sitting in the audience at a show last year, watching Damien Jurado sing this heart wrenching song, thinking, “Oh, man. This is so Jonah.” Even now when I hear it, I think of the struggles Jonah goes through.

Is he still coming around like an injured bird needing a nest?

A place to rest his head in a song you'll regret

Lord knows I don't want to compete

But I still sleep in the very sheets he's been in

4. Brothers on a Hotel Bed by Death Cab for Cutie. Technically, this song is about a couple growing apart, possibly in the midst of a divorce. But to me, it also really fits the divide that slowly opens up between Jonah and Kellan throughout this story. These two—they’ve always been close. Always. And now they aren’t, and it’s incredibly sad to watch them struggle to accept their new realities.

On the back of a motorbike

with your arms outstretched trying to take flight,

leaving everything behind.

But even at our swiftest speed

we couldn't break from the concrete

in the city where we still reside.

And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn

for the sea, like navy men,

'cause now we say goodnight

from our own separate sides

like brothers on a hotel bed

When Hana Fisher moves to the small town of Mixon, Texas to live with her dad, she dreads having to work at the boring pile of dirt he fondly calls a motocross track. But when she gets there, she finds the rinky-dink dirt bike track from her childhood has grown into the most respected racing track in the state.

Now popular by association, Hana endures the pain and sweat of working in the summer heat in order to fit in with a sport she’s growing to love. She gets a real family, a best friend and not just one, but two of the fastest racers trying to win her heart.

When Hana abuses her status as the track owner’s daughter to help the gorgeous Ryan Russo cheat in the biggest race of the year, she risks more than just losing her job. Every good thing in her life is at stake now- her friends, her dad’s trust, and Ash Carter- the kind-hearted racer who may not be as alluring as Ryan, but is proof that nice guys don’t always finish last.

My Review:

Ok, who remembers that movie on Disney Channel about motocross? Motocrossed? I loved that movie. So, when I read the summary of this book I had to be a part of the tour. I really enjoyed this book. I loved learning more about motocross and I think it had some really great lessons to go along with it. This is a young adult novel and there is definitely some teen drama involved.

The story is about Hana, a girl who escapes to her dad's for the summer as she is fighting with her mother. Hana's dad owns a motocross track and Hana instantly gets swept up into the motocross world. She helps work at the track where she meets the gorgeous Ryan, who she easily develops a crush on. Ryan was not very likeable for me and I was suspicious of his intentions the whole way through. He is confident, cocky, and flirtatious. I never once felt he really liked Hana- I felt like he was using her for some higher purpose. She also meets Shelby and her twin brother Ash, who is also a motocross racer. Ash is nice, kind, and just an overall good guy. He likes Hana, but unfortunately she is too busy mooning over Ryan to really take notice. She does find him attractive though (even with the dreads!). Shelby and Hana end up becoming good friends, which was exactly what Hana needed. She had someone to gossip with about guys and share clothes with and Shelby, who wasn't exactly a tomboy, is a motocross kid, but hanging out with Hana really excited her and brought her out of her shell.

So Ryan or Ash? Well, that's easy. Ash! He's a good kid, he's a gentleman, doesn't care about how Hana dresses or how much make up she wears, and he is just a genuine guy.

I liked Hana well enough- but I did find her to be self-absorbed at points. (She's a high school girl! Most high school kids are quite egocentric.) She would tend to zone in on certain things, not paying the least bit of attention to outside factors going on around her. She did flip flop a bit between boys which irritated me, because I really felt like she had her decision made. She just wasn't getting the reception she needed from the one she wanted, which made her question things.

I thought the pacing in this story went extremely well- I didn't reach that point where I was turning pages to just get to more action. I think Cheyanne did a great job of keeping the reader engaged. The world of motocross is just so neat and interesting so I couldn't help but get excited when Hana was spending time at the track.

This story shows Hana that sometimes the thing you think you want the most is the one thing you need the least. She learns that people can be manipulative to get what they want, but she also learns that the best people don't have to come from money and that appearances don't matter. It's what's inside that counts.

My one hang up? I needed more kissing. :)

This is a cute summer read and I would recommend if you're looking for something light and fun.

My Playlist:

1. I Hate Everything About You by Three Days Grace (Opening scenes: this song reminds me of Hana's frustration with her mom)

2. Kick it in the Sticks by Brantley Gilbert (Hanging out at the track)

3. See You Again by Miley Cyrus (Hana's wanting to see Ryan again)

4. Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen (After she gives her number to Ryan)

5. Nice Guys Finish Last by Green Day (Ash's anthem- racing against Ryan)

6. One Thing by One Direction (Describes Hana's feelings for Ryan)

7. Broken by Lifehouse (At the hospital with the Carters/scene in Ash's room)

8. Counting Stars by OneRepublic (Hana thinking about Ash)

9. Complicated by Avril Lavigne (Scene in the garage with Ash and Hana)

10. Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not by Thompson Square (Also the scene in the garage)

11. Thinking of You by Katy Perry (While Hana is at the lake party with Ryan)

12. I Will Wait by Mumford and Sons (When Ash brings Hana home from the lake)

13. Feel Good Drag by Anberlin (Just an upbeat song to get you hyped for Nationals)

14. I Will Not Bow by Breaking Benjamin (Ash and Ryan's pissing contest)

15. What Hurts the Most by Rascal Flatts (After Ash finds out about Hana and Ryan's kiss)

16. Miss You by Foster the People (After everything goes down at Nationals)

17. Perfect Time of Day by Howie Day (end of the book)

She's in love with him.
He's trying not to love her.
One night changes everything.

Aston Banks never meant to get close to Megan Harper – not even for that one night. Haunted by a childhood he refuses to face, he knew she could break through every wall he’d ever built and tear them down without even realizing she was doing it.

Betraying Braden by starting a relationship with Aston wasn’t on Megan’s to-do list, but the second she sees a glimpse of someone other than the arrogant ass she’s come to know, she can’t walk away.

Aston’s childhood is worse than Megan ever guessed, but as he tries and fails to push her away, it’s clear her love is stronger than the demons that cling to him every day. And now, because of it, he finally has to deal with what he’s buried deep down.

What he doesn’t want to face. What he’s fought against for so long.

And they have to do it all without Braden finding out.

Keeping a relationship secret has never been harder.

**This book can be read as a standalone novel, but reading The Love Game (The Game, #1) beforehand is advised.**

Excerpt:

 ASTON:

"You okay?”

I shake my head. “No. Every time. Every fucking time he brings her up. I thought he wouldn’t in front of you, but he did.”
“He has his own pain,” she says softly. “It doesn’t excuse it, but he does. He feels guilty for what happened to you – that he couldn’t stop it.”
My mind reels for a second and I look down at her. “He told you that?”
She nods, letting her hand drop from my back and standing in front of me. I stop.
“You’ve never let him tell you.” She reaches up and cups my face. “He hurts, too, Aston. You both hurt. It’s not something that will go away, but you can’t let it rule your lives. If you let pain rule you you’ll get lost in it.”
“What if I’m already lost?”
“You’re not lost. You’re hiding, but you’re not lost. I won’t let you get lost.”
I let my hands come up and rest on her back, pulling her into me. “What if there’s no map?”
“Then I’ll get lost with you,” she whispers. “I won’t let you let them win, Aston. I won’t let you get sucked in by those demons. I won’t let that happen. I care too much.”
And she does. I can hear it in her voice.
She wraps her arms around my neck, and I hold her to me tighter, our foreheads resting against each other.
“I’ll try, Megs,” I promise. “I can’t say I won’t, but as long as you’re here, I think I’ll be okay.”
“And you’ll talk to your Gramps? Just once?”
“I’ll think about it. How about we just focus on stopping me from getting lost for a bit?”
“You just need a place to aim for, that’s all. You need a place to go to.”
“Go on then.” I smile. “Give me a place.”
“Okay.” She pauses for a second, closing her eyes and chewing her lip.
“I’m waiting…” I tease her.
Her blue eyes open, shocking me with their vitality. “Aim for the moon, because even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
“I don’t need to aim for the sky. The only star I’ll ever need is standing right in front of me.” I brush my lips over hers. “Maybe the place I need to aim for is nowhere other than where I am right now.”
“Maybe I’d go with you wherever you ended up.”
“Maybe I’d never ask that of you.”
“Maybe you wouldn’t need to ask. Maybe you’ll never need to ask me for anything, because I’ll always be here.”

My Review:

As I said in my The Love Game review (here), I absolutely love Emma's books. This is the second installment of the Game series and this time Aston and Megan are our main characters and we get their alternating POV's. We were introduced to both of them in The Love Game, but here we get to know them on a much deeper level. Aston is introduced to us as even bigger player than Braden! He is known for the string of girls he takes to his room for sex and for just an overall womanizer.

Megan, however, we know is Braden's best friend. They grew up together and to say that he is protective of her is a serious understatement. He sees her as a little sister and clearly warns his fraternity brothers that she is off limits. She is driven and cares about her school work and also is not one of those girls that sleeps around. It becomes quite clear right away who Megan is interested in.

I loved Aston and Megan's relationship. What started off as one steamy night has become anything but. Aston isn't the arrogant, jerk that everyone has come to known. He definitely has demons from his past that still haunt him to this day. He has feelings for Megan, but is afraid to show her how he really feels because he knows once he opens up to her he won't be able to hide from her. Bit by bit Megan breaks down his walls and shows him that she wants to be there for him to fight the demons together. She is tough as nails too. Even when he tries to push her away, she stands strong and won't let him take the easy way out.

"I thought he was a "get what you see and see what you get" kinda guy. Now I think I was wrong. Now I think-no, I know- there's a side to him he's never shown anyone, that he keeps buried deep inside." (pg. 46, ARC copy)

I think the biggest thing I loved was the fact that their relationship was technically kept secret. The sneaking around, pretending to be normal around each other was completely hot. Their banter back and forth in front of their friends is hilarious. He's always egging her on and teasing her and she's constantly playing it off that he's the most immature guy to ever grace her presence. However, how long can they keep their friends from finding out the truth?

As I said, Aston has some pretty serious demons from his childhood that still haunt him. When he finally opens up to Megan and tells his story your heart just feels for him. Not to mention, Emma does a great job of giving us flashbacks so that we can really see how deep Aston's pain really goes.
He is a lot more complex than he lets on and underneath the cocky, arrogant exterior we see a man who has little to no self-worth and tries to bury the pain in meaningless sex.

The crew is back once again, but the focus is really on Megan and Aston's story. We do see more of Braden and Megan's friendship and I love that she has someone who is so protective of her. And

"I want someone to love Megan as much as I love you. Hell, I want someone to love Megan as much as I do, and if that means I have to fight off every guy that comes calling for her until he comes along, then I will." (pg. 43, ARC copy)

We are introduced to Aston's grandfather, who we find out raised him, and watching the two interact is fun. Gramps is a bit crotchety, but loves the time he gets to spend with his grandson. They don't always see to eye on certain things and both of them can be quite stubborn.
Overall, I felt this story dealt with some heavier themes than The Love Game did, but it is an absolutely beautiful book about two people finding their way to each other, falling in love, and learning to place their trust where it counts the most: in one another.

"I'm thinking that she's sliding between the cracks of me, gripping hold of the mismatched pieces and tearing them apart. She's studying them, getting to know them, to know me, and then she's carefully lining them all back up and holding them together.

What she'll never know, is that she's the glue that holds it together.

She's the glue that holds me together." (pg. 95, ARC copy)
