I throw a few bills at the cab driver and slam the door behind me as I get out, my eyes tracing the silhouette of Aaron Stone sitting on my bench. “If this happens again, Mr. Stone, I may have to look into taking legal action. Two nights in a row? I hardly imagine you sitting outside my house is a coincidence.” He looks up, his eyes piercing in the evening darkness. “Back to work, Miss Black?”

“I have a job. As much as I’d love to sit around and feel sorry for myself, I’m afraid I have far more important things to do.” I stroll past him and put my key in the door. He closes his hand around mine. “Things, or people?”

“I fail to see what business it is of yours.”

“It’s very much my business, as you’re well aware.”

“Perhaps in your opinion. But if it will make you feel better, it’s things, not people.” I turn around. “I’m not back to work fully. Yet.”

“Yet?”

“I have to earn money somehow, and my big spenders aren’t pretty little rich boys who need a date for the night. So yes, yet.”

“Never,” he growls, leaning into me. “You aren’t fucking another guy, Dayton.”

“That’s not your decision, Aaron. You had your chance to decide that, and you blew it. Now if you’d like to remove yourself from my property, I’d appreciate it.”

His lips touch mine in a scorching, forceful kiss that knocks me backward. I gasp at the sudden touch, and he slides his tongue between my lips. His hands cup my face, holding me against him, and my back is flush against the door. He tastes of the woody whiskey he adores, and he tastes of power and determination and finality. “Tell me one thing,” he says, his lips brushing across mine with his words. “Has anyone else kissed these lips?” His thumb comes between us and flicks my bottom lip. Who the fuck does he think he is, answering that question? I’m ready to push him away, to shove him on his ass, but instead what happens is a whisper of, “Fuck you.”

“Answer the fucking question, Dayton.” My chest heaves at the thickness of his voice. I can hear the emotion beneath the demand. “No. They haven’t,” I answer. His lips crash against mine once more, rougher, harsher. I can feel nothing but his palms rough against my cheeks and his lips soft against my own. His tongue sweeping through my mouth and owning it completely. The ball of need building in my lower stomach and sending aches down through my pussy. He kisses me deeply, completely dominating my mouth, possessing me until I’m consumed by him and for a long moment, I forget why this shouldn’t be happening. Until he pulls back, his nose resting alongside mine, and I remember again. I am in love with Emma's The Game series, so when I saw she was writing Abbi's book I could hardly contain my excitement! We met her briefly in the first book, as she is Maddie's best friend, and your heart couldn't help but break for her, as she was institutionalized, after attempting suicide. Abbi's story is both heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time, and I'm glad Hart was not afraid to dive into such a difficult topic. This book is realistic and shows you the effects depression has on Abbi, as well as her fight to overcome it.

 

However, Abbi was fortunate enough to have such amazing people in her life to support her. Ultimately, she was the only one who could pull herself out of the darkness, but her family and friends were there for her every time she felt herself slipping and I'm really proud of Abbi for seeking out help when she needed it. Abbi's love of dance is also what motivated her to get better, as she wants to attend Juilliard. Her passion for dance and the release it brings is so evident in this book and I thought Emma did a brilliant job of giving life to Abbi's dreams.

 

"Dance is the one thing that keep me up. It's the one thing I let myself feel; it's the one thing that is truly real to me. It's the only thing that's allowed to get past the wolves and climb my walls."

 

When we first meet Abbi in this book, she is in the midst of dying her hair. Abbi wants nothing more to do with the girl she once was because it makes her feel weak. She hates that she let that weakness consume her and she wants nothing more to forget that life. However, forgetting is not the answer. She can't change what happened to her or the person she once was- instead if she hopes to move on, she has to come to terms with everything and go from there. It's not something that will just happen overnight- it will be a step by step, day by day kind of thing until finally she can look back with resolution and understand that she is stronger now because of what happened.

 

One of the people will help her take it day by day is Blake. I absolutely loved Blake's character. He has his own demons that haunt him, but he can relate to Abbi in a way not many others can. He is also a dancer, and the two end up paired together to perform a couples dance, which leads them to spend a lot of time together. I think it's important that they became friends first, because Abbi is in no way ready for a relationship. While Abbi is not unfriendly, she does keep herself closed off to others. She is skittish in big groups and populated settings. Blake zones in on her that first day at dance and sees the haunted look that she desperately tries to hide and he recognizes it, as it is not the first time he's seen it.

 

Abbi unknowingly shares bits and pieces of herself with Blake, as she takes him to her favorite places in the city. He is very observant of her and recognizes a familiarity in her that makes him want to get to know her and be there for her. It takes Abbi quite a bit of time to trust Blake, as she is afraid of how he makes her feel and what that could potentially mean for her.

 

"You have to dance the way you fall in love; effortlessly, unrelentingly, and with everything you have."

 

Their passion for dance is what brings them together and offers them both healing and the persistence to move forward. While Abbi and Blake have some amazing sexual tension, this is not an overly steamy book. Instead, it focuses on much deeper issues and I believe Emma paced their relationship beautifully and I don't think it would have been as realistic if she had done it any other way.

 

In my opinion, The Right Moves is Emma's most emotional, in depth novel to date. Abbi's journey is not one to be taken lightly and watching her evolve and go after what she wants is truly inspiring and I encourage everyone to pick this book up.

He taps my thigh with the back of his fingers. “Do you want food or not?”

“Shit! Kia!” Reese calls after me. “I didn’t mean it like that!”

 

I ignore him and keep walking. Step, step, step. Keep going, Kia, don’t stop for him. His hand grabs my arm, and I turn, yanking my arm back as I near where his truck is parked.

 

“What, Reese? You’ve made it clear last summer was a mistake. You’re right. It was. It was just a whirlwind mess between two people who had no idea what they wanted from life.”

 

“I didn’t mean it like it came out. I just meant I didn’t want you to hate this place because of me.”

 

“I don’t hate it because of you.” I look at him and laugh bitterly. Shadows play across his face in the darkness. “I hate this place because of what it means to me.”

 

“What does it mean, Kia? Tell me.” He loosens his grip on my arm; his thumb gently stroking my skin.

 

“It means nothing,” I say quietly, stepping back. “Nothing.”

 

“You’re lying,” Reese steps closer and holds my other arm. “If it meant nothin’, you wouldn’t be running from me.”

 

“I’m not running from you! Why would I be? One summer, that’s all we had.”

 

“Is it?” he asks quietly. “One summer? Is that really all we had? Do you think my feelings disappeared the way you did? Do you think they upped and went in the middle of the night just like you?”

 

 

“I never said that-”

 

“‘Cause they damn well didn’t!”

 

“Rumor has it you’re seein’ someone, or have you forgotten that?” I throw back at him.

 

“Maybe I don’t care about her. The person I care about is front of me.”

 

“After eleven months? Why don’t I believe you?”

 

“Let me show you. Make you believe me.”

I shake my head. “You’re so fucking funny.” I pull myself from his grip and move toward my car, passing his truck.

 

“Am I?” he growls, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward him. My back hits the door of his truck, and he stops in front of me. He places his hands either side of my head, his face bent into mine. “Am I funny, Kia? Really?”
 

My heart is pounding furiously at his nearness, and I push at his arm. My blood is thundering through my body, my breathing coming hard and fast. I can feel the warmth emanating from his body. I want more. I need more. I want to feel his body pressed against mine, even if it’s just for a second. I need to feel it.

 

 

His hazel eyes collide with mine, and I can see he feels the same. It’s been a year. He still feels it. I still feel it.

 

“Jokes usually are funny,” I retort, trying to move away from him in an attempt to regain control of my body.

 

 

His mouth crashes into mine, his lips molding to mine. One of his hands cups the side of my head, the other resting on my waist. I grab his shirt when he nips my bottom lip. My mouth opens, and his tongue meets mine, stroking it in a gentle caress. Our bodies push together, and I drink him in, kissing him greedily.

 

Now, I remember. I remember why I can’t fight it. Why I’m powerless. Why, at nineteen, he is all there is.

I walk around him and away from him, walking backward. I shake my head, everything warring inside me. “I… No, Reese. I can’t.”

 “Kia?” he calls.

I was so happy to be a part of the cover reveal for this book! I love the cover and the blurb immediately had me hooked! (How sexy is a name like Reese?!) I jumped at the chance to receive an ARC of this book and was so excited I got offered the chance! (Thanks Emma!) To top it all off, I saw I was even mentioned in the acknowledgments! That is such a huge honor for me as a blogger- so thank you Emma! <3 <3

I absolutely fell in love with Emma's The Game series, so I already knew she was a talented writer. She does such an amazing job of creating strong characters (both main and side) that you can't help falling in love with and she does a fabulous job of developing them. Second Chance Summer was no exception. She has created an emotionally charged main character who, while having her own issues to overcome, doesn't let that control the tone of the book. While Second Chance Summer tackles topics such as alcoholism and parental issues, it is a fun, sexy read filled with a great cast of characters.

Kia, our main character, has just returned home to Alabama for summer vacation from school in NYC. It is very clear she doesn't want to be there- she left for a reason. And one of them has to do with the gorgeous Reese Pembleton- the boy who she spent last summer falling for. She is determined to steer clear of Reese and of the memories last summer held for both of them. She gave that up as soon as she ran away from him one year ago. However, it wasn't just him Kia was running from. Her mother is an alcoholic and her father took off on them- to say things are complicated for Kia is an understatement. But it does really give you insight as to why she won't let herself be caught by Reese. Upon not obtaining stability in her own home with her parents, who's to say she won't end up the same way? She has walls around her heart in order to protect herself, but it's only matter of a time before the very persistent Reese manages to shatter them around her.

"You can't ever be friends with the person your heart cries out for, and you definitely can't be friends with the person whose heart cries out for you, too. That ain't the way it works." (e-ARC 38)

I loved Reese. He's the definition of a sexy, Southern boy. As much as he hurts from Kia's disappearance, he won't let that get in the way of winning her back. What I love most about Reese is that even though he's in love with her, he is such a good friend to her. He doesn't hesitate in being there for her, even if she does push him away every time they start to make progress. Yet, as Kia clings to the heartache of her father leaving her mother, she can't keep fighting Reese forever. She is ruled by fear and it takes some serious convincing on his end to get her to take a chance on them.

"You want that magic of last summer back, when there was nothing that mattered except us. I know deep down you want nothing more than to turn around right now and grab me and kiss me the way you used to. You want to remember what it was like not to have a care about anything other than the person right in front of you. You want it as much as I do. I want to wake up each morning knowing you're mine and I'm yours. I want you to fall asleep in my arms again just so I can hold you and kiss your forehead. We both know you want everything I do. You're just better at hiding it than I am." (e-ARC 40)

Emma is the queen of writing secondary characters. Adam and Luce are so pivotal in this book and I am really anxious to see what happens for them. Adam, being Reese's best friend, and Luce being Kia's, have always spent time together. Luce has been crazy about Adam, but he doesn't come across as the relationship type. Both of them are charged with sexual attraction and yet neither have made the first move. I liked Luce a lot. She is a great friend to Kia and always has been. When things got to be too much at Kia's house, Luce has always offered her friend comfort at her own.

As I stated above, Kia's mom is a real piece of work. She is an alcoholic, working at a bar where she wastes her money away on drinking. She's never around and when she is, she's usually passed out drunk somewhere in the house. She is bitter over her husband leaving her and once we find out the reason behind it, I don't blame him one bit. The way he handled it however was wrong. Kia did not deserve to be left without answers and be the one to take care of and clean up after her mother as a teenage girl. With all that in mind, it's easy to see why Kia tries to keep Reese at such a distance. She doesn't want to fall so in love him only to have him leave her someday. Yet, Kia's already fallen and now she just needs the reassurance he will catch her every time.

Overall, I love Emma's writing, her characters and their development. Thankfully the story does not end on a cliffhanger, but like Emma said there are loose ends to be tied up in the next book, not just with Kia and Reese, but also Adam and Luce. I can't wait for more!
