BREATHE DEEP . . . AND JUMP IN

At the ends of the earth, Patagonia is a land where ambition trumps reason and the savage summit of La Aguja lures the most determined climbers. It's also the last spot a "play-it-safe girl" like Auden Woods expects to find herself. But she'll lace up her brand-new hiking boots and do whatever it takes to secure a dream job at an adventure magazine . . . even if it kills her. And it just might. When disaster strikes, her only chance at survival comes in the form of the surliest, sexiest mountaineer ever to come out of Scotland.

After a climbing accident cost him his brother, professional mountaineer Rhys MacAskill is at the end of his rope. Redemption is not in his future. That is, until a terrifying storm blows a budding journalist into his tent and it's up to him to make sure they both survive until morning. Despite the demons weighing on him, Rhys can't resist the temptation of the charming American and one wild night just isn't enough.

Auden and Rhys soon learn there are no shortcuts as they navigate their way between life, death, and atonement, and discover something they never expected—love.

When I first saw Lia Riley was writing a romance based in Patagonia, I knew I HAD to read it. I'm so glad I did, because I love travel-adventure books! Not to mention I am always up for a grumpy, gruff hero! (Who is Scottish at that!) While I enjoyed this one and its setting, I did struggle a bit with Auden's character.

She was a lot of fun, but sometimes her inner monologue could drive me a little crazy. She is pretty quirky, which I love, but some of it felt over the top. I also didn't like some of the choices she made when it came to Rhys and being truthful with him. I did admire her gumption though. After being made a fool by her twin sister, she is determined to go out and do things that scare her and I just loved that she took such a risk. She is not the most... organized though. She has never done a real climb before, so she isn't properly prepared and when she goes off the beaten path, she stumbles across Rhys MacAskill, a grumpy Scottish man who just wants to be left in solitude.

Oh boy did I both love and hate Rhys! (Mainly love though.) I hated how he tried to push her away and convince himself she was nothing more than hook up. He is SO grumpy and I just love grumpy heroes! He has mountain climbing in his blood and after a horrible accident, he is seeking salvation at the top of La Aguja. He isn't thrilled about Auden's presence, but he can't deny that he is attracted to her. They have some pretty sexy times in this one and I liked seeing Rhys slowly drop his guard with her. Their relationship isn't perfect and could be downright hard to witness at times because I hated seeing either of them feel hurt by the other. There is so much self-discovery and growth with them though and I loved seeing how far they'd both come by the end of the novel.

I love Lia Riley's writing. She does such an amazing job of infusing such passion into her words and there were several passages that just gave me chills at the depth and magnitude they conveyed to the bigger picture.

"We've stumbled to the place of secrets, where lovers through the ages have snuck away. We can't stay here. No one can. But that's what makes it better. Knowing that you'll lose a thing sharpens the sweetness. A kiss should be the simplest thing in the world. Not this gentle stirring, like wind through the underside of leaves, inexorable as the glacier grinding behind us. So hot and yet it doesn't scorch. No, with every breath, with every touch, his kiss carves. When he's finished, my landscape will be forever changed."

I always get the worst case of wanderlust when I read these kinds of books and it is clear that Riley did her research. I really felt as if I were with Auden and Rhys as they were traversing La Aguja. It's a beautiful journey that is filled with so much- love, life, loss, heartbreak, and self-discovery. Those are usually the most memorable and I'm glad I picked this one up.

Sometimes the worst mistakes turn out to be the best…

Smoke jumper Wilder Kane once reveled in the rush from putting out dangerous wildfires. But after a tragic accident, he’s cut himself off from the world, refusing to leave his isolated cabin. When a headstrong beauty bursts in, Wilder finds himself craving the fire she ignites in him, but letting anyone near his darkness would be a mistake.

After her Hollywood life went up in smoke, Quinn Higsby decided to leave Tinseltown behind and return to Brightwater to care for her ailing father. She spends her days in a small bookstore, until her peaceful existence is up-ended by a fascinating but damaged man. Quinn is determined not to be scared off by Wilder, not once she’s experienced the heat of his passions.

But when an arsonist targets the community and Wilder is accused, he must confront the ghosts of his past. Will his desire for Quinn burn him up or will he be able to tame the wildness inside and rekindle a hope for their future?

I just cannot even get enough of this series you guys. Seriously, it's WONDERFUL. I absolutely love the Kanes and being in Brightwater with them as they find and fall in love. We had heard about the elusive eldest Kane brother, but haven't officially met him until now. There is a reason for that and it really broke my heart to see Wilder keep his distance because of his guilt. An unfortunate accident brings him back home and while he wants nothing more than to hide away, fate has other plans in store for him.

I absolutely loved how this paralleled Beauty and the Beast! It fit Quinn and Wilder's story SO WELL. She is a book-loving chatterbox who has come back to Brightwater to help care for her ailing father and has caught the interest of the good-looking volunteer firefighter, whom she has no interest in. She isn't looking for love or a relationship, especially with her father and her own worry that she could also inherit the early on-set Alzheimer's gene. However, when her father ends up slipping out of his care facility and ends up at Wilder's, Quinn can't help but be drawn to the gruff, grumpy man who orders books from her store.

I won't even lie. I LOVE gruff, grumpy men who have an ooey gooey center! That is Wilder for sure. He is just as attracted to Quinn, but doesn't see what a broken, damaged man like him who has his own ghosts haunting him can offer someone as vibrant as her. Thankfully, Riley doesn't make him overly angst-filled. He can't fight his feelings for her and he doesn't want to, and slowly lets her in to his life and his heart. It is a beautiful thing to witness and the two just balance each other out so well. Not to mention, they have crazy hot chemistry together. There are so many sexy, tender moments that I just never wanted this one to end.

We get to see another side of Grandma Kane here too, and I loved that. Her and Wilder are quite the headstrong ones in the family and between his grumpiness and her crotchetiness, it was a sight to behold. Yet, Quinn is unfazed and doesn't let either one get the best of her. Grandma Kane loves her grandsons in her own way and while it may not be the traditional grandmotherly one, it's still powerful and the Kane boys really see that tenfold here.

I loved how Wilder and Quinn's story ended and I thought it was perfect. I also like that we got to see Archer and Edie take the next step. I was a little bummed we haven't gotten resolution from Annie and Sawyer yet, but maybe we will in Kit's book? (I'm REALLY hoping Riley won't let us down and give us Kit and Goldie's book next!)

Overall, I really can't recommend this series enough, especially if you love small town romances that just give you ALL THE FEELS.

Sometimes two wrongs can make a right...

Bad boy wrangler, Archer Kane, lives fast and loose. Words like responsibility and commitment send him running in the opposite direction. Until a wild Vegas weekend puts him on a collision course with Eden Bankcroft-Kew, a New York heiress running away from her blackmailing fiancé…the morning of her wedding.

Eden has never understood the big attraction to cowboys. Give her a guy in a tailored suit any day of the week. But now all she can think about is Mr. Rugged Handsome, six-feet of sinfully sexy country charm with a pair of green eyes that keeps her tossing and turning all night long.

Archer might be the wrong guy for a woman like her, but she's not right in thinking he'll walk away without fighting for her heart. And maybe, just maybe, two wrongs can make a right.

Just when I was lamenting the end of the Sweet, Texas series by Candis Terry, the Brightwater series by Lia Riley came along and filled that hole in my adult contemporary reading life! I love books that are set in small towns where everyone knows everyone else, so naturally this series is just a win for me. We briefly met the main characters Archer and Eden (Edie) in the previous book but we only got a glimpse of their tension together.

I really liked how Riley matched the timelines up with these two books. I loved seeing Archer and Edie's story coincide with Sawyer and Annie's from the first book. I love strong secondary characters and feeling a connection to them.

Archer Kane has always been the bad boy womanizer and we certainly get a glimpse of that as the book opens. However, we also see that he is growing tired of his playboy ways and wonders what it would be like to settle down. Edie on the other hand, is running away from commitment, as her fiancée was only with her for monetary reasons and had a girlfriend on the side! She ends up meeting Archer and he is the one to give her a ride back to Brightwater, where she can get her head together and her life back on track.

However, Archer finds himself really liking Edie and her company and he doesn't want to cut ties and go their separate ways. It was sweet to see Archer vie for her attention, but she was hesitant to start something with him, especially having found out his history and that she was trying to get herself back together. They have such great chemistry though and I loved seeing them together.

I really enjoyed reading this one and I just can't get enough of this series. These books are fun, sexy, and sweet at the same time. Grandma Kane is always a favorite and has me cracking up because that old woman does not hold her tongue for anything! I'm really looking forward to meeting the eldest Kane brother next!

A kiss is only the beginning...

Pinterest Perfect. Or so Annie Carson’s life appears on her popular blog. Reality is... messier. Especially when it lands her back in one-cow town, Brightwater, California, and back in the path of the gorgeous six-foot-four reason she left. Sawyer Kane may fill out those wranglers, but she won’t be distracted from her task. Annie just needs the summer to spruce up and sell her family’s farm so she and her young son can start a new life in the big city. Simple, easy, perfect.

Sawyer has always regretted letting the first girl he loved slip away. He won’t make the same mistake twice, but can he convince beautiful, wary Annie to trust her heart again when she’s been given every reason not to? And as a single kiss turns to so much more, can Annie give up her idea of perfect for a forever that’s blissfully real.

I am ALWAYS game for a second chance romance set in a small Western town! I love the vibe of these novels and they just make me REALLY happy. Last First Kiss was no exception. I completely fell for these characters and the anticipation of Sawyer and Annie getting together nearly drove me mad! I loved those two together so much and I just wanted Annie to throw caution to the wind and jump into his arms like she did off the cliffs so long ago.

However, things aren't so easy for Annie. Having returned to Brightwater with her 5 year old son, Atticus after her divorce, Annie is only there temporarily to get her family's farm taken care of and sold off so she can move on to San Francisco and start fresh. She certainly didn't account for Sawyer Kane to saunter back into her life. Coming face to face with the boy turned ALLLL man who broke her heart and humiliated her when she was younger, is no easy task for Annie. Yet, the chemistry that once existed between them is definitely still there.

I do understand Annie's hesitancy. She's already undergone a huge life change and she has constructed a plan- a way to get back on track. Sawyer is making her feel things she hasn't felt in a long time and is making her question her decision to leave Brightwater. Having once fled the small town because of prejudices against her and her family, she is afraid to let the place that once hurt her heal her.

Not only did I love Annie's blossoming relationship with Sawyer, but I loved seeing the interactions between Sawyer and Atticus. There was one scene in particular that moved me and I definitely got a little teary-eyed! I loved little Atticus. He is so adorable and I love that he marches to the beat of his own drum. Even though Sawyer is a little awkward around kids, he has already proven he will be a great father figure to Atticus.

We briefly met Sawyer's younger brother, Archer, who is known as a playboy, and I am excited to get his book next! He has his sights set on Edie, a new-to-town coffee shop owner. She instantly befriends Annie and I liked seeing their friendship develop, especially since Annie needed a new friend who didn't know of her family's history. I also really liked Annie's older sister, Claire, and I have to admit I'd like to see her with Wilder, Sawyer's eldest brother. Even though I haven't met him yet, I'm already shipping those two!

All in all, I thought this was a cute romance and I loved rooting for Sawyer and Annie the entire time. Sawyer is a winner and one hell of a guy. I loved how Riley wrote his character- he wasn't afraid to be honest and open with his feelings, but he was still 100% man too. And good Lord can he kiss! Definitely pick this one up if you're in the mood for a feel good, sexy second chance romance!

Lia Riley made New Adult readers fall in love with her breakout debut, Upside Down. Sideswiped, the second of her series, made readers clamor for more. Now, with INSIDE OUT, Lia Riley brings her evocative Off the Map series to a stunning conclusion.

When Talia first moved from California to Australia to study abroad, she never dreamed she'd find the love of her life. Bran understands her like no one ever has before. And despite the numerous challenges they've faced, they've always managed to figure out how to stay together. But this time they'll face their toughest hurdle yet. Is their love strong enough to keep them together?

There is always a bit of nervous anticipation when it comes to the final book in the series. Will the author do the characters justice? Will all previous storylines be resolved? Will we get the ending that we so desperately crave? I am very pleased to report that I can say yes to all three questions when it comes to Lia Riley's Inside Out. Talia and Bran have come a long way from when we first met them back in the first book, Upside Down. They have shown growth, maturity, and have truly come full circle in this series. They are working through their issues, insecurities, and working to conquer their own fears.

"You can run and run but you'll never escape you."

It's been a rough road for the two, and it's easy to get frustrated every time one them starts backsliding. Talia and Bran are not easy characters to love, but their unwillingness to give up on one another really endeared them to me and I was rooting for them to find their happiness every step of the way.

Talia has been through so much in her life. After having lost her older sister in a tragic accident, she has had to deal with a mother who made her feel she was the one to blame for the event, as well as worked to control her obsessive-compulsive disorder. Talia is at a crossroads in her life, trying to decide what she wants to do, how to be happy... she just has so much on her plate and she really struggles with her feelings of inadequacy. Bran is her rock and I am really thankful for him. He's far from perfect, having his own set of issues, but he absolutely loves Talia and will not give up on her. He refuses to let her push him away and I loved his resilience.

This book is definitely a steamy one. I think it might be the hottest of the series! The sexy scenes are so infused with love and pure, raw need that I get chills thinking back on them! There is so much passion between them and even when Talia was having problems connecting with him, he still manages to show her how much he craves and loves her. (Yeah, that shower scene? OMG.)

Life is not a script. There are so many unplanned events along the way and Talia and Bran have been witness to many of those during their time together. Heck, they've had quite a few in this final book alone. I am happy with the way Riley concluded their story. The drama is kept to a minimum and it's really more a book of self-discovery. Talia has to come to a point where she accepts herself for who she is and is okay with that. She has so much to offer and instead of doubting herself, it's time for her to find her strength and be the woman she wants to be. Most of all, I am happy as a clam that Talia and Bran are standing strong throughout the novel, facing down the challenges and obstacles that come... together.

"You'll never believe such beauty exists- not really- not unless you have the guts to brave life, go off the map, and find your own way there."

“See how I want you.” His agonized whisper is barely audible over the water lashing the tiles. His hips lose their slow, lazy tempo. He pounds himself deeper, harder.

An intense ache spreads from my belly through my breasts. I’ve forgotten what it feels like to be turned on. Muscles tighten within my sex. I’m fast remembering.

“Want. You. So. Bloody. Much.” He always sounds like this right before he comes, as if it hurts, like I’m pressing on a wound that’s too much to bear. “Damn it, Talia.”

I can’t look away as he loses himself in a blaze. I’m a prism, refracting his light. His features spin through a kaleidoscope of emotions starting at brutal need and ending with an unexpected vulnerability. My fear about the future disperses so quickly it’s hard to believe only minutes ago it felt inescapable. Bran isn’t some scary what-if. He’s a fact, a truth to hold on to against all life’s uncertainty. Why have I been so afraid he’ll see me as a walking disaster? He knows what it’s like to mess up, to feel like a failure. I need to reframe my question. Rather than asking what if Bran gets sick of me, maybe I should ask, what if we’ve worked our asses off, and finally have a shot at a real forever?

He falls to his knees and grabs me before I can take a breath or do anything but throw my arms around his lean shoulders. Water soaks through the white cotton of my pajama pants until I might as well be naked too.

“Show me the way back to you.” He buries his face in my neck, drags his lips to the place behind my ear, the headwaters for all delicious shivers.

“I want that so much.”

“I’ll do whatever it takes, go off the map.”

“You will?”

“We’re already there.”

He’s right. We’ve been explorers for some time. During the last little while it’s as if a blizzard descended, we were stuck in a whiteout, so close, but the snow made everything indistinguishable. At last, the storm’s abating and he’s right there, and I’m over here. Suddenly, we can see each other.

Within us is the way forward. We each possess half of the compass and must join together to find the right direction.“You’ve got to know how much I need you.”

A lock of his wet hair twists in a boyish curl.I go to smooth it down, but my fingers tangle in the thick waves, and instead draw him closer. He bows his head, still panting a little.

“You can’t check out on me like that again. I can’t live this bloody life devoid of you—”

I brush my mouth over his lower lip, that reddening mark where his teeth left imprints. “I won’t. I’m so sorry. I-I’m ready to try. Thank you for believing in me.”

“I’ll never stop.”

We rest our foreheads together, holding one another upright. Droplets fall from his hairline onto my cheeks, joining fresh tears. He’s water, I’m water, and our flotsam and jetsam fit in a way that’s strange, yet familiar. I have no idea where we’re going, only that the way out is lined with broken feathers, bloodstains, marrow ash, and the serrated teeth of sharks.

This journey will take all I’ve got, a small price to have everything.

And that’s exactly what this guy in my arms is.

It was only meant to last the summer . . .

Talia Stolfi has seen more than her share of loss in her twenty-one years. But then fate brought her Bran Lockhart, and her dark world was suddenly and spectacularly illuminated. So if being with Bran means leaving her colorless NorCal life for rugged and wild Australia, then that’s what she’ll do. But as much as Talia longs to give herself over completely to a new beginning, the fears of her past are still lurking in the shadows.

Bran Lockhart knows that living without the beautiful girl who stole his heart will be torment, so he’ll take whatever time with her he can. But even though she has packed up her life in California and is back in his arms for the time being, she can’t stay forever. And the remaining time they have together is ticking by way too fast. Though fate seems determined to tear them apart, they won’t give up without a fight—because while time may have limits, their love is infinite . .

Bran and Talia's love story continues in Sideswiped, but this time the couple faces some very real life problems as a couple and will have some hard decisions to make that could upset the balance they have fought to achieve in their relationship.

Buckle up folks! It's going to be a bumpy ride! Even though Talia has been reunited with Bran in Tasmania, they have a lot of trials to overcome and work through as a couple. Talia is only in Australia on a temporary visa and is fearful of what will happen once her time there draws to a close. She is also struggling to control her OCD- some days easier than others. She loves Bran desperately and is happy that she's with him, as he is her anchor and feels she can truly be herself with him. I felt for Talia. She has so much going on in this book and it really messes with her head. She knows Bran loves her, but she still has jealousy and insecurity issues, and that really irritates him.

Bran has always been a prickly fellow, and this book is no exception. He still closes himself off, even despite Talia's begging not to. He's an avoider, where she needs him to communicate. He is restless with his spot at the university, but refuses to entertain the possibility of taking a better opportunity, because it would take him away from Talia and that is NOT an option. He believes they are enough together, but what he doesn't realize is that Talia is ALSO restless- she has always dreamed of going into the Peace Corps and making a difference and wants to give it a shot. Every time she brings up their prospective opportunities, Bran refuses to listen, as he doesn't believe their love could survive the long distance, as he's seen too many instances of love failing for one reason or another.

I get where Bran would have his reservations, but I hate that he doesn't believe in them, especially seeing how much it tears her apart. Talia really shows her strength in this book, because she refuses to let them sacrifice their dreams for one another, as she knows they would end up resenting one another for it later in life.

There is a lot of back and forth with Talia and Bran in this book, and their bickering definitely irritated me a bit. It seemed a bit unnecessary at times and could have been resolved in a more mature way had Bran not been such a pain in the butt. Still, my heart ached for him because he just has so much trouble opening up to her.

I do feel that ending was a bit rushed, and I would have liked to see more deliberation and perspective on Bran's part, so we could see what led to his revelations at the end. Other than that, I love how fun the dialogue is. Riley does write some great banter between Bran and Talia, and that is what made their bickering a bit more bearable. Not to mention, Talia is just such a great female character, despite her insecurities. I love that she doesn't hold back and that she is willing to make the hard sacrifices, even at the cost of losing the person she loves most of all. I really admire her as a character, and I think she will be happier in the long run over the choices she has made.

They are both intensely passionate people and that passion extends to one another as well. I loved their tender scenes together and how Talia is the one that Bran clings to like a talisman when it comes to their time with his family. His solution to keep her in the country is a desperate one and I felt it was all wrong for the two. This book does not end on a cliffhanger, but Lia does provide the first chapter of the final book, Inside Out, and THAT is where I was left with heart palpitations. I am in desperate need of the final book because I do want to see how Talia and Bran's story will conclude.

An hour later I’m zipping the back of Talia’s wet suit at the edge of the tide line. Moonlight glimmers on the black water. The waves line up perfectly, peeling clean. I breathe deep, savoring the air’s briny tang and the musty smell of decomposing kelp. My awareness is sharpened by anticipation, the five senses amplified by the dark. Talia shuffles at my side, getting antsy.

“You sure about this?”

“Yes. Well, sure enough.” Another set breaks. The conditions are choice. If she changes her mind, I might need to have a ride—a quick one. Maybe two, tops.

“What’s that noise?” She stills. “There it is again. Can you hear it?”

I concentrate and smile when a sound like a wheezing donkey drifts from beyond the breakers. “Fairy penguin.”

“Shut up! There are penguins around here?”

“Sure. In the summer they build burrows in the scrub along the coast. If you stand outside a colony right after sunset, things get pretty noisy.”

“Penguins.” She almost whispers the word. “That’s so cool.”

The wash races over the sand and breaks across our toes. I figure out a plan of attack. “We’ll paddle to the left shoulder where the wave’s less steep. Stick with me, okay?”

No one else is out and my voice feels extra loud even though I’m speaking quiet. “Have you ever been to Rome?”

She takes my hand. “No, not yet.”

“Me neither. But I can’t imagine the Sistine Chapel being more amazing than this.”

Besides the moon, there’s zero light pollution. The Milky Way arches in a dazzling band across the sky’s apex. Individual stars are indistinguishable in the brilliant haze. “You ready?”

She squeezes my hand in reply. We paddle out. “Whoa!” She pushes her chest up to better peer over her board’s tip. Around us the water casts a luminous green-blue light. “Phosphorescence. Cool, eh? It’s blooming phytoplankton, caused by this marine species of dinoflagellates releasing enzymes that—”

“That’s enough, Sid the Science Kid. Let me retain this fairy kingdom illusion a little while longer.”

“Science is cool, Captain.”

“I never said— Oh, crap!”

Instead of duck-diving under the incoming wave, the water wall pounds her in the face. She breaks through the other side, coughing out a lung. “We can head back to shore, don’t have to—”

“I’m fine. Please. There’s a wave coming. I can feel the pull. Can you?”

“You want it?”

“It’s all yours.” I take off on a left break and fly down the smooth face. For a few perfect seconds, I’m right here in the moment. Rational thought is eclipsed and with it the aggravating confusion of having everything: Talia, Tasmania, honors, and still hungering for more like a greedy bastard. I paddle back to her. “You looked great.”

“That was good.” She sits, bobbing lightly. “It’s not as freaky out here as I imagined.”

“Fucking hell, Captain. You said you weren’t scared.”

“No, I never did. I’m scared by everything. But I want to do this.”

We’re quiet. A few more waves come but I let them go, happy to be with my girl, the stars, and the radiant water. Hard not to believe in magic on such a night. She clears her throat. “About what happened back at the house…if this is going to work, you can’t shut me out. You’re not just a you anymore; we’re an us. We have to be there for each other.”

I bob on my board and drag my fingers through the water. The phosphorescence lights from my touch. Finally I speak. “Karma’s got this mate; he’s on the crew of a Sea Alliance vessel. There’s an opening for a gig, with voyages to Japan and Antarctica.”

“You want to go for it?” I can’t decipher her expression. I almost say no, but honesty’s easier in the anonymous dark. “Yeah, kinda. But I want to be with you more.”

“Oh, Bran, that’s way too much pressure.”

“What do you mean?”

“Imagine coming home in a few months and I’m all vegged on the couch, watching awful reality television. Will you think to yourself, ‘I could be gallantly defending the high seas but instead I’m attached to this boring anchor’?”

“Life with you is bound to be a lot of things, but boring isn’t the first depiction that springs to mind.”

“But life isn’t always night surfing. I…I can’t compete against a fantasy.”

“I never said you had to.”

“Isn’t supporting the other’s goals a fundamental part of the good girlfriend/boyfriend job description? I mean, say I always wanted to volunteer in Africa? Join the Peace Corps.”

“Do you?”

“I used to toy around with the idea. Now? I’m not sure but I don’t want to close myself off to opportunities.”

“We can travel through Africa someday.”

“Peace Corps is one of my dreams, not yours. I want you to have the freedom to pursue your own happiness.”

“You make me happy.” I strike my words like flint before sucking in a rough breath. “Look, I’m not a guy cut out for the long-distance thing. I hated every second we were apart the last two months.”

“Bran…” She reaches out her hand and I take hold. “I won’t let go.”

“Me neither.” I scrutinize the sky, heart clanging. Everything appears so deceptively still. In reality, the Earth careens through space. Talia and I, we’re little specks of cosmic dust in the grand scheme. It wouldn’t take much to blow away from each other. “But in the future—”

“I hear what you’re saying and I appreciate the support. But the only future I’m willing to discuss is the one where it’s me and you—together.”

Better to orbit far away from black holes.

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult Romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling fourex with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments. A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn't mind. Much. If You Never Get Lost, You’ll Never Be Found

Twenty-one-year-old Natalia Stolfi is saying good-bye to the past-and turning her life upside down with a trip to the land down under. For the next six months, she'll act like a carefree exchange student, not a girl sinking under the weight of painful memories. Everything is going according to plan until she meets a brooding surfer with hypnotic green eyes and the troubling ability to see straight through her act.

Bran Lockhart is having the worst year on record. After the girl of his dreams turned into a nightmare, he moved back home to Melbourne to piece his life together. Yet no amount of disappointment could blind him to the pretty California girl who gets past all his defenses. He's never wanted anyone the way he wants Talia. But when Bran gets a stark reminder of why he stopped believing in love, he and Talia must decide if what they have is once in a lifetime . . . or if they were meant to live a world apart.

Finally! I feel like I've been waiting forever to get my hands on this book! This book was first put on my radar back in February thanks to Momo from Books Over Boys. After reading her author feature with Lia, I couldn't wait to dive into Talia and Bran's story! First of all, I love that it's set in Australia! I have never been before, but after reading this book, I feel as if I have! I love the whole studying abroad storyline and it was just the kind of New Adult romance I have been craving.

Pacing: Overall, I enjoyed the pacing in this one. I felt the storyline moved at a good speed, and I liked how Bran and Talia's relationship developed. The two have this incredible intensity about them, but hold back from one another.

Storyline: Talia Stolfi is embarking on a trip of a lifetime to study in Melbourne, Australia. She does not leave without emotional baggage, however. She is hoping Australia will be the escape she needs from her broken life in California. It is here she meets Bran, who is also a bit broken by his past. Letting Talia into his life comes as quite a surprise to him, as he hasn't wanted that kind of relationship in a long time. They have some heavy baggage from the past to overcome if they want to move forward and have any kind of future...

Characters: I really liked Talia. She has just the right amount of sass and spunk without coming across as too much. She has obsessive compulsive tendencies that play a significant role in her daily life. Most people would brush them off or ignore them, but Bran notices right away. I like that he cares about Talia even when he doesn't realize it. He comes across as a surly jerk in the beginning, but we gradually see him open up and become more carefree with Talia. Bran is definitely a swoon-worthy guy though. He claims he doesn't believe in love anymore, but he is just hurt by the events that transpired in his past and I can't blame him. He is accepting of Talia and sees past the façade she has created to prove to the world that she's ok. She feels an immense amount of guilt over what happened and to add insult to injury, her mother is not the zen, carefree woman she pretends to be. She is not a nurturing influence to Talia and I found myself really resenting the woman and wishing Talia didn't have to deal with her at all.

Final Thoughts: I really loved this one. The Australian setting and culture bring so much to the story and really make it that much more engaging. The romance between Talia and Bran is not an easy one, but I liked seeing them fall for one another and then realize that they both desperately want more together. However, this is book one in a trilogy and I couldn't help but feel a bit unsettled upon finishing. There is no cliffhanger, so don't fret, but Riley definitely leaves you ready to continue their story in Sideswiped!

A half hour later we are suited up, dorked out in snorkels and fins.

I take her hand.

“You ready?”

“How cold is the water again?”

“Warmer than the Arctic.”

“That’s not a glowing recommendation.” She squeezes my hand. “Okay, let’s do this, before I change my mind.”

“One, two, three.” She leaps with me and we plunge off the pier. The water is frigid, creating the perfect habitat for the hundreds of marine species surrounding us. The pier’s not deep, only five or six meters, ideal conditions to get up close and personal with the trevally, blue devils, zebra fish, rays, and there—I tap Talia on the shoulder and point.

A weedy sea dragon swims toward us, flitting through the kelp to keep camouflaged. The long orange-red body resembles a seahorse except for the leaflike appendages and short spikes lining its back.We tread together, paddling only when necessary to maintain our position against the current. Here, in this strange world, time slows, life is diluted to the rhythm of tide and waves. I reach out and take Talia’s hand, wishing for an irrational second to sprout gills and swim with her down to the ocean’s deep, indigo places. Find a mermaid kingdom and hide from the world forever. The sea dragon studies us for a long moment before darting into the shadows.

Talia flicks the snorkel from her mouth. “Oh my God.” Her eyes are almost as wide as her smile.

“That was incredible. Mystical almost.”

“Magic.” I stroke closer to her, closing our distance, unable to resist her happy glow. Talia’s hair plasters to her cheeks; she’s enchanting, a sea witch who’s cast a spell on me. Her back hits one of the pilings, and we’re beneath the pier, shielded from the tourists promenading overhead, with dragons lurking beneath our fins. I kiss her hard, openmouthed, and don’t hold back the groan when her tongue flicks over mine, still a little shy.

I drop my hands below her arms to brace her, keep her well above the low sets gently rolling by to crash onshore. She wiggles closer and I silently curse our wet suits keeping us from true skin-to-skin contact. Talia’s bikini is skimpy and black, exactly how I like a girl’s suit. I’d love to pull the string in the back, watch as the top slowly slides off. Since the three-inch neoprene renders that fantasy impossible, I use my mouth to cover every inch of her exposed neck, her high cheekbones, her brow, each of the six freckles dappling the tip of her nose.

“Am I your girlfriend?” Talia sounds offhand, but her eyes tell me she’s dead serious.

“Girlfriend?” The word sends a jolt down my spine. “Well…you’re a girl and a friend.”

“So, no, then?” Her smile vanishes. “I mean, are we seeing each other, seeing other people?”

“Do you want to see other people?”

And if so, who? Tell me so I can beat the shit out of them if they look at you sideways.

“Do you?” Her downturned lips twitch in the corner. She struggles to smile, and to watch that effort makes me feel helpless. I don’t want to expose myself, but fuck if I’ll hurt her.

“Since I’ve seen you, Talia”—I pause, clearing my throat—“it’s been pretty fucking impossible to see anyone else.”
