Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

My Review:

Ok. I think we're all pretty much feeling the same thing as we read the last page of the book. And that was, "Are you freaking kidding me?!!?!?!?!?!" Ednah Walters, you slayed me with that ending. I know this is the first book, so not all hope is lost, but GAH. I was mad. And have I mentioned I don't like cliffhangers?! Anyways, I guess it's a good thing because I really can't wait to get my hands on Book Two.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read, even though I also felt like it was a little similar to JLA's Lux series. Torin reminded me alot of Daemon, except I liked Torin WAY better than Daemon. (Ok, you Daemon fans- CHILL. I grew to like Daemon in the second book) Torin is the mysterious, hot new neighbor who moves in next door to Raine. He oozes sex appeal and definitley has the bad boy vibe going on for him. Raine is intrigued, but is also just starting a relationship with her best friend Eirik, who she has known for years.

It did take me a bit to really get into this story, as the first half of the book was primarily character building and development, and Raine trying to figure out who Torin was and what these mysterious runes she kept seeing meant. However, once the story picked up and both Raine and us readers started discovering those things, I was really interested. I'm really hoping Walters will expand on the idea of the runes and how it's all connected to Norse mythology in the next book.

Yes, I just said Norse mythology. As in Odin, Hel, Loki, etc. Wooo! I love mythology so I cannot wait to find out how Walters is going to incorporate this into her series! That was the one thing I didn't get enough of this time around.

I liked Raine as our protagonist. Though, after a while I was getting kind of tired of the whole Eirik/Torin drama. Clearly, she had feelings for both and as much as she questioned her romantic feelings for Eirik, that is when she really should have ended things with him. Torin, on the other hand, was quite obvious about his feelings for her, even though he did spend most of the book trying to push them away, since he knew he was only sent to do a job. (And what a cool job at that! I don't want to spoil it, you'll have to read the book to find out!)

This is a good start to the series and lovers of the paranormal/mythology/romance will really enjoy this one.

  4. I really liked this book to, but the ending KILLED me, like OMG "NO!" Needless to say I can't wait for July to get here to see what happens next. I am not crazy about cliffhangers either, but at least we have the synopsis of book two to ease the pain a tiny bit :)
