Top Ten Tuesday #14

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

1. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. (This book. Man, it was so hard to read, but wow, it was a very good one. It is about a girl who tells her story from heaven, trying to somehow connect with her family to help them move on and also find her killer.)

2. Bared To You, Reflected in You by Sylvia Day. (These are adult novels that deal with very heavy sexual subject matter. Both main characters are incredibly broken and try to have a relationship but have so much heaviness to sort through.)

3.The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay. (My heart broke while reading about Nastya and Josh. She suffers from the reminder of a horrific past, and he deals with the loneliness of everyone leaving him. Such an amazing book, but wow, it was hard to read.)

4. Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry. (There are some hardcore family issues in this one, but wow, it has to be one of my favorite contemporaries this year. Because despite everything, the two main characters are able to find love and trust within each other.) (Giveaway HERE)

5. The Kite Runner by Khaled Houssini. (Another really hard one to read. The worst part of it was the bullying that one of the kids received and the things that were done to him. I can probably never read this book again because it was so disturbing to me.)

6. Thin Space by Jody Casella. (This book does not release until September, but the main character is dealing with the loss of his twin brother and is trying to find a 'thin space' (or a place where he can enter a different dimension) in order to find him.)

7. Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker (I loved this book, but it still hurt me to see how traumatized our main character Kacey is after the accident that took away the people she loved. She meets Trent, and we finally see things look up for her, before Tucker tears them all down again.)

8. Wait For You by J.Lynn (Don't get me wrong- this book is awesome and has more wonderful parts than bad, but I feel bad for our main character who was violated as a teenager and still struggles to move past it.)

9. Everneath by Brodi Ashton. (I remember reading this thinking how Nikki even managed to pick herself up and go to school. Reading about her and seeing how utterly low and desolate she was broke my heart.)

10. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. (It's been so long since I've read this book, but it's about a girl who commits suicide, but has left a tape detailing why.)

  2. Eeeek... I forgot about The Lovely Bones... that book was super disturbing. I honestly thought the movie was better than the book. I think the visual aspect was lacking in the book. I remember being so sad about it that I gave it to our neighbors for their yard sale!

  4. Pushing the Limits made it my list too, the things Echo and Noah had to deal with was horrible.
I agree with you with Bared to You and Reflected in You, both Eva and Gideon had sad pasts that they have to make it through. I'm angry that the author decided to make it from three books to five books though. ):<
And Everneath! All that isolation! Poor Nikki. ):
    Awesome list Jessica! :D

  7. Lovely list as always, Jessica. I have not read Wait for You yet but I have seen it on a couple of lists today and I think I will need to add it to my TBR. I can't believe I forgot The Sea of Tranquility! My favorite book of 2013 and a very heavy subject.

  12. I've three of the books on your list. The Kite Runner was a tough one to read, and I don't think I could handle reading it again either. It was a good book though. Ten Tiny Breaths was also really good and it surprised me with how much I ended up loving it.

    You have a great list!

  13. TRW is on my wish list, sounds so emotional and intense. The Lovely Bones was so hard to read but well worth pushing through my comfort zone to do so. Great list.

    1. I agree Trish. As difficult as these books were to read, I'm glad I pushed through because they were memorable and definitely made me appreciate the fact that I haven't gone through anything like some of these characters have.
