Top Ten Tuesday #24

By 8:15 AM

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT pick up a book

1. LGBT themes (I personally have nothing against this, but those types of books just are not for me.)

2. Political topics (I don't particularly care for politics, so books about them are not for me.)

3. Religious themes (This actually depends. I used to read a lot of Christian Fiction and I rather enjoyed it. Francine Rivers' Redeeming Love is one of my favorite books ever. But typically, I steer clear of books dealing with religion.)

4. Rape (I can't do rape scenes. Emotionally, they are just too much. If I find a book that goes into detail about it, I probably won't be reading it.)

5. Biographies/Autobiographies (I just don't find them very appealing. I am a straight up fiction kind of girl)

6. Harming of Animals (Yeah I don't handle animals being harmed or killed very well.)

7.  No Romance (I generally don't care for book that don't have romance. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part I need at least a little to satisfy me!)

That's all I could come up with this week. What made your Top Ten?

  1. Great list!! I agree with you on almost all of these. A couple of them even made my list this week....I couldn't come up with 10 either :)

  2. No romance! I have to have romance whenever I read a book :) just can't enjoy the book then!! Hahahaha (though there are a few books that are an exception)
Actually, I agree with you on every point. I don't enjoy any of those types of books either! And horror, not a horror fan!

    Awesome post!

    1. I almost put horror myself, but held back because I've only read like 2. They didn't do it for me, but maybe there are some out there that will? And yeah. Romance is a biggie for me.

  3. Child violence is always impossible for me. Couldn't even think about The Shack.

    Here's my Top Ten list.

    1. Ah! I can't believe I forgot that one! I do not do well reading about graphic abuse scenes. I never read the Shack. I don't think I could handle it.

  4. Ohhh politics! How did I forget to include that one. Those books annoy me. I like my reading to be fun thank you. Great list! You did much better than me haha

    1. LOL. I only remembered politics because my dad is obsessed with David Baldacci and Vince Flynn books and I think they're kind of politics centered. Government conspiracies and all that. Not for me.

  5. Your #7 rules my reading world, Jessica. If there's no love, I'm not reading it. It's why I included brother/sister books on my list. Because, well, yuck. :)

    1. Hahahah! Right? If there's not a teensy hint of romance I get really bummed out! I need the LOVE!

  6. Great list girl! I cannot read a book with no romance or any harming of animals. No romance = bore to death, Harming of animals = crying through the whole book.
    Happy reading(:

    1. Thanks Jackie! Yeah harming of animals is NOT ok with me. And well a book without romance? Yeah, I find myself pretty bored!

  7. So with you on politics, harming animals, and rape. I definitely read for enjoyment and just can't stomach those. Great list!

    1. Exactly! I read for fun not to be informed. Now if a character has been raped in the past, and is working through it and dealing with it- that's a different story, I can handle that. But an up in your face scene... yeah, no.

  8. Great picks! I didn't do this one this week. Takes too much brainpower :-) I hate politics and am not into it at all. Same with Religion. I'm not much for controversial topics. I read a lot of NA which has the subject of Rape, which makes me squemish enough but if they detail the scene, I can't do it either. Seriouly, I agree with everyone of these. :-)

    1. Thanks chica! I almost didn't publish mine but when I saw everyone else posting less than ten I went ahead anyways. But yeah, I'm not ok with detailed detailed rape scenes. I know Bared to You has some flashbacks and they hurt my heart enough, but I loved the crap out of those books so... yeah.

  9. Great list. I agree with most of those.

  10. I agree with you on politics and religious themes! Totally forgot those! Rape also, I recently read a book that contained a rather detailed one and I think I almost fainted. Realized is not for me! Anyway great list!

  11. Good list! I agree with most of these as well. Although sometimes, one of these things might just happen in the story surprisingly. Like recently I did read a book where there was animal abuse--I was freaking crying at that! And another recent one the heroine was nearly raped but still sexually abused. Had no idea either would happen, but still the books had to be read for they were ones I enjoy!

    1. Yeah, I know it's sometimes unavoidable because it's put into a book without your knowing so it's hard to write off books like that. But I won't ever be able to read The Kite Runner ever ever again.

  12. Great list! I don't like being tricked into religious books, and I need my romance.
    Thanks for sharing!

  13. I have seen the Animal harming and politics on a couple posts today and both are great answers!! Reading about violence always makes me feel sick to my stomach!!! And let's face it, POLITICS ARE BORING!!!! This was such a tough topic, but you came up with some great answers!!!

    1. Thanks! Yes! Politics just don't interest me. And I get confused too easy. I don't like having to over think what I'm reading!

  14. I sometimes like Politic books, if the author does them right they're interesting, but why I never read them is because I can't follow whats happening. I get so confused.

    1. Exactly! I get SO confused! I have trouble following politics in the news without getting confused, much less read about them!

  15. yes to the No romance part! I need romance in my novels, even if it is was insignificant! also I agree about LGBT, Politics, biographies.. also don't like it when the book is about a character searching for her/his long lost mother, father, siblings.. if that is the MAJOR point of the story.. I tend to not pick it up, but if it isn't (like The Host) then I would pick it up!

    1. Agreed! I don't care about searching for family either. If it's a side story, ok, but not the main focus.

  16. Woop completely understand the no romance. I just feel like everyone falls for someone at some time. It's just human nature.

  17. The harming of animals - nope, can't do it. In fact, dog-killer/NFL star/disgusting human Michael Vick "won" the # 1 spot on my list this week.

I also don't really enjoy religious books, bu I do like a good autobiography every now and then!

  18. Politics, religion or harming of animals - totally agree, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than read these.
Autobiographies - just not for me either but I might read if it was someone I really admired. But prob not.
I have read a few rape books and yes they are hard to read but when sensitively done can make for an emotional, heart breaking read. Just finished Going Under for a blog tour and loved it.

    1. I can deal with rape scenes to an extent. If they're overly graphic it's hard for me to read.

  19. That was a great list every single thing I TOTALLY agreed with! Especially no romance :)

  20. Yep, harming of animals, rape, religion & biographies/memoirs are ones I avoid pretty much like the plague too. I just can't. Politics are ok...sometimes. Like if it's a fantasy with related political intrigue or something, then I can probably take more than some. Books that deal only with realistic politics? Hell no! XD LOL Great list Jessica

    1. I can do politics in a fantasy setting like that too! Like in dystopians, I enjoy learning about the political systems and such. But yeah realistic politics? Nope!
