He left to travel the world for fame and glory, but only after spurning Gabby Ward and crushing her young heart. Now Hunter Markham has come back home to the sand and salty breeze of the North Carolina Outer Banks so he can open up Last Call, a beach bar nestled among the dunes of the Atlantic.

Gabby Ward is not happy that Hunter has returned. Bitter over his rebuff years before, she’s content to stay far away from him and his dangerously charming ways.

Gabby’s well-schemed plans to ignore Hunter go up in flames when he presents an offer to her that she simply can’t refuse, throwing them together in a common quest to each reach their goals. Working together day in and day out proves to be problematic for Gabby, who soon realizes that the feelings she had for him are still very much alive. Hunter struggles to reach through to Gabby’s cold heart, all while starting a new career away from his life as a top ranked, professional surfer.

What starts out as a mutual business arrangement soon turns into a passion that neither of them can continue to deny.

Hard choices lay ahead for both of them when Hunter is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to the pro surfing tour.

Choices that could destroy what they have built or take them further than they ever had dared to hope.

Sawyer Bennett has become one of my favorite contemporary romance authors. I adored her Off series, so when I saw she was starting a new one, I knew I had to read it! I am so glad I picked this one up for review! I love the best friend falling for the brother trope, as well as the fact that the characters had a history and are now reuniting years later. On the Rocks is steamy, fun, and an overall great romance and I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

I loved Gabby. She was such a great female lead! When we first meet her, we discover she is in love with her best friend's older brother. It is on their graduation night that she decides to risk it all and kiss him. However, that kiss changes everything for Gabby and Hunter. She is humiliated, hurt, and angry over Hunter's reaction. Now, 5 years later, Gabby is sucking up her pride and seeking Hunter out for a job opportunity. The two have had minimal contact during the last 5 years and all they have done is fight with one another. It's painfully obvious they only tolerate one another for Casey's(Hunter's sister) sake. Gabby is no pushover. She has spunk and attitude and won't let Hunter intimidate her. She wants the job and is hoping he will take a chance on her, as she works in a very male-dominated field. Gabby and Hunter's first meeting does NOT go well, but Hunter is a very persistent guy.

I was pretty disgusted with Hunter in that prologue. All I could think was, 'what a douche!' I hated how he handled the situation with Gabby and how he made her feel. However, my attitude towards him did a pretty quick 180 after that. Hunter is a good guy who handled an unexpected situation poorly. He was shocked that Gabby had feelings for him and even more shocked at his own response to her. Five years later, he is retired from surfing professionally and has returned to home to help his twin brother Brody, who is making a very difficult transition in his life. Coming face to face with Gabby again and knowing she is the best fit for a remodeling job of his bar, leads Hunter to realize that she's not the same 18 year old as before. He sees her as the sexy, fiery woman that she is and wants to make amends for the way he treated her before.

It's no shocker that these two have serious sexual tension. The fact that they've both kept it pent up for so many years makes it that more exciting. As flirtatious as Hunter is with her, Gabby refuses to let herself indulge and go down that path. She has closed her heart off to Hunter Markham and is determined not to let him breach it again. As I said before, Hunter is one persistent guy. He knows what buttons to push and how to maneuver his way past those defenses. However, it does take awhile. What starts as merely casual turns into something much more and the pacing is just right for Gabby and Hunter.

Gabby and Hunter have their share of obstacles to overcome in this novel. Gabby is determined to keep their 'relationship' a secret, as well as casual. Hunter, on the other hand, is struggling to make sense of his feelings for Gabby, while at the same time trying to deal with his distant twin brother and deciding if he wants to go back on tour.

I can't NOT talk about Brody, Hunter's twin brother. Brody has not had an easy time. After a mistake that changed the course of his life, he is now dealing with the aftermath of that mistake and is a very different person because of it. His siblings are worried about him and their relationship is strained at times. My heart ached for Brody and what he has been through and I absolutely need his story Make it a Double pronto! I am also really interested in Casey, Gabby's best friend and Hunter's sister also. She is a spitfire and I am definitely interested in discovering more about her.

Overall, I really enjoyed On the Rocks. I felt it was a strong romance with a great cast of characters and I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Gabby and Hunter develop and the direction Bennett took them. I am a huge fan of Sawyer's and I definitely recommend this book, as well as her other ones!

USA Today Best-Selling author, Sawyer Bennett, is a snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. She is married to a mobster (well, a market researcher) and they have two big, furry dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn’t have many weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.
