Mara Dyer wants to believe there's more to the lies she’s been told.
There is.
She doesn’t stop to think about where her quest for the truth might lead.
She should.
She never had to imagine how far she would go for vengeance.
She will now.
Loyalties are betrayed, guilt and innocence tangle, and fate and chance collide in this shocking conclusion to Mara Dyer’s story.
Retribution has arrived.

This will probably be a rather short review, as I will be keeping it spoiler free. After the crazy cliffhanger from the last book, I was SO glad my library had this one! (Thanks Andrea for the heads up girl!) We are left with a pretty big 'this better not be real' moment and I was terrified to see how everything was going to resolve itself and play out in the end.
The final book in a series always makes me nervous because I'm so afraid it won't live up to expectations. While I enjoyed this one, I did have a lot of questions afterwards and still felt a bit unsettled at the end. I wish I could talk more about it, but I was kind of bothered by the role of destiny and what it means for our characters. I know that there is also free will, and I like that that is exhibited in this book, but I still had a hard time swallowing the initial 'forces' against them.
Mara's character is something to behold. No matter what comes at her, she refuses to be beaten and broken down. I love her resilience and she isn't afraid to take care of business. Her ruthlessness could scare me at times because I feel she is walking a very fine line, where the slightest thing could push her over the edge into complete darkness. I never wanted Mara to lose herself completely, so I was definitely holding my breath at times!
Jamie's character plays a pretty significant role in this one, so for that I was really happy. She not only needs his help, but she also needs his friendship. And his one-liners are so beyond great. I also liked Stella a lot, even though I'm a bit sad as to how things ended with her. Her, Jamie, and Mara had formed a little team, so I didn't want to see that camaraderie dissolve.
We finally understand the blackouts that Mara is having and we get the whole story behind them and why she is losing time. I really liked seeing that unfold, as it brings everything full circle and we really understand how everything came to be.
This book has plenty of action and we finally get our answers, which is a relief especially after living in WTF world for two books! I am really glad I read this series, because I wanted something different from what I have been reading and this was definitely different. Hodkin's execution is so intriguing and I definitely commend her for a job well done!

SO.... I am still reading this book... I am terrified Jessica! I don't want it to end because what if I don't like how it ends... I can't handle the stress! I keep picking it up, reading a little bit, and then I have to put it down... I guess I'll finish it eventually but I am being completely ridiculous and I cannot stop myself. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it though, that helps me a bit lol Great review!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed this one! And that you get the answers from the previous two books. I need to catch up on this series! I loved the first book; it was soo good!
ReplyDeleteLovely review!! :)
SO WE GET ANSWERS?! :O I still haven't read this one (I've been procrastinating SO HARD), but I definitely will be reading it... at some point. I need to re-read the others one, honestly. THANK YOU for keeping your review vague, honestly, because I feel like this is one of those books that need to kept shrouded in mystery, so the reader can read it for him/herself. I'm soooo glad you enjoyed this book, Jess!
ReplyDeleteFabulous review!

I freaking love Jamie. Like I love Jamie to the point where I want a book that's all him. Those one-liners...LOL! Lovely review lady! It was SO HARD for me to pull together a review that was spoiler free so I think I just ended up gushing a lot. I don't even remember what I wrote I think it goes up Friday? Glad we read these around the same time it was good to ramble about it with you while it was still fresh :D
ReplyDeleteI think Mara Dyer is so different from any YA series out there, so it's very refreshing. Maybe the last book didn't answer EVERYTHING (I remember something being problematic for me, but the details are escaping me lol), but I think it wraps up well enough. Plus I loved the last third (I'm sure you can guess why :P). I was really worried about where Mara was heading, though - just how dark she was going to be - but I like how unapologetic Michelle made her.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, love!
Leave me some comment love! And I will get around to commenting back!
My blog is an award-free blog, however, as I just do not have the time to follow-up.
