Maya Delaney's paw-print birthmark is the mark of what she truly is -a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly everyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it's only a matter of time before she's able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents.

Now Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they're kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home.

This is the second book in Kelley Armstrong's 'Darkness Rising' series. So far I am enjoying this series a bit more than her first (Darkest Powers). I think Armstrong's writing has matured a bit, and I just like Maya alot more than I liked Chloe.

After Book 1's cliffhanger, book 2 starts off fast and furious. But then the book hit a pretty big lag for me. I kept reading thinking, 'when is something big going to happen?' The end of the book picked up a bit more thereby, setingt us up for the third, "The Rising", which is due out in April of this year.

I'm glad now that I read her first trilogy however, because it's about to come into play with this one.

Overall, it was an ok book, but I think it really did hit the 'second book slump'. However, I like the storyline and the characters so I will definitely be reading Book 3 to find out how it ends and how the Darkest Powers trilogy comes into play.
