Allison O'Malley's plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she's been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison's mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn't trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother's sanity.

My Review:

This is the first book in Laura Howard's Danaan Trilogy. When I first read the synopsis and saw the words Tuatha de Danaan, I was hooked. I LOVE Irish mythology and folklore! Overall, I really liked reading this one.

I think Howard is off to a good start in the series, but I did feel as if the pacing was a bit fast at times. We get a good look at Allison's life and it's a bit heartbreaking to be honest. She is completely devoted to taking care of her mother and focusing on school, so that does not leave her much time for a social life. Her cousin Nicole, who lives next door, tries to get Allison to come out with her and her boyfriend and some of their friends on multiple occasions and I love how her cousin tries to include her. Allison is reluctant to hang out with them, as among them happens to be her long time crush Ethan. She's had feelings for him since she was a kid, but has never acted on them. We can tell that Ethan also has a crush on her too, but he is also known for being a ladies man.

Despite her cousin trying to include her in things, Ethan also tries to get Allison to go out with him. I really liked Ethan's character, but I wish I would have seen some more of these two. Allison keeps pushing Ethan away despite her feelings for him, and she doesn't seem to realize that he is going to end up moving on... without her. I am quite excited to see what's next for these two in the next book!

Besides dealing with her mother and her feelings for Ethan, Allison also has another factor come into her life. Her long-lost father, Liam. She doesn't want anything to do with him- until he tells her that she and her mother are in danger. She forms an uneasy alliance with her father after her mother goes missing.

This is where the storyline went a bit too fast paced for me. I feel like we were sucked into the fae world and introduced to all these key players, but my mind didn't have time to digest it all before it was over. Let's be honest- I wanted more time in Tir na n'Og! I know we'll get more in the next book though.

I'm beginning to think authors need to label their books like medicine bottles. Instead of the: This medicine may make you drowsy, we should see: This book may contain a cliffhanger. You have been warned. Because HOLY CLIFFHANGER! I already told Laura on Twitter that she slayed my heart and I needed to know immediately when book two was going to release (December as of right now).

I read this book in the matter of a couple of hours and I am definitely going to continue this series because I need to find out what happens now! And I'm hoping to see more of Ethan and Allison, now that she's 'seen the light'.

About the Author

Laura Howard lives in New Hampshire with her husband and four children. Her  obsession with books began at the age of 6 when she got her first library card. Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High and other girly novels were routinely devoured in single sittings. Books took a backseat to diapers when she had her first child. It wasn’t until the release of a little novel called Twilight, 8 years later, that she rediscovered her love of fiction. Soon after, her own characters began to make themselves known. The Forgotten Ones is her first published novel.

  3. I did the cover reveal for this book and ever since I've been curious about it. I unfortunately didn't have time to read it for the blog tour but I hope I'll get a chance. It sounds like a great read and I'd love to have a fast pacing book for a change. Great review! :)

  4. Excellent Review Jessica! I agree about the cliffhanger story! I love mythology too, and I haven't read a lot of Irish mythology, but I would love too. I'm glad you enjoyed this book. Hopefully the sequel won't be too fast paced.
