When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.
Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.
They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.
Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.
Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.
They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.
Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.
I've had plenty of time to digest this book now and yet as I sit here trying to write this review, I realize I'm still just completely gutted over Miles and Tate's story. Colleen Hoover will once again evoke so many powerful feelings that your heart will be overwhelmed by the sheer force of them. Miles and Tate's journey to love isn't an easy one... but why should it be? Love is messy and can be complicated. It can fill you up as quickly as it can destroy you. The fact that this isn't an easy love story is what makes it that much greater. You witness firsthand the raw emotions these characters feel, so even the smallest step in the right direction feels like a giant victory.
"Love isn't always pretty, Tate. Sometimes you spend all your time hoping it'll eventually be something different. Something better. Then, before you know it, you're back to square one, and you lost your heart somewhere along the way."
Ugly Love is told from both Miles and Tate's perspectives. We see the present through Tate's eyes, but we get to see Miles' past through his. It was monumental to see the Miles Tate sees now versus the Miles of the past, as his story is slowly unraveling. Seeing the broken man he has become really makes you wonder what happened in the past to bring him to such a point. It more than makes you wonder. It makes you desperate to find out Miles' story. There were points in the present that Miles really made my heart hurt and some of his actions towards Tate were a bit hard to swallow. I wanted better for her because no one should feel used or second best in a relationship.
"That's how it is when a person develops an attraction toward someone. He's nowhere, then suddenly he's everywhere, whether you want him to be or not."
Miles did make it clear from the beginning that he wasn't looking for more. He and Tate both thought they could have a no strings friends with benefits arrangement. However, I think it's extremely difficult to have a platonic sexual relationship with someone. Feelings always get hurt, whether they meant to get involved or not. Both Miles and Tate make their own decisions though and will have to live with the consequences.
Miles is not a bad guy though. He has been deeply affected by what happened in his past and he's never been able to get over it. He refuses to let anyone in and internalizes everything, magnifying his pain that much more. Tate is the game changer. He feels vulnerable with her and to mask his fear of opening up, he pulls away, crushing her. She clings to the hope that Miles will eventually open up to her and will feel the same way she does. The thread she clings to is a fragile one and may never be strong enough to withstand his past. He is the only one who can change his future, but he has to want to badly enough.
"I know the thought of confronting your past terrifies you. It terrifies every man. But sometimes we don't do it for ourselves. We do it for the people we love more than ourselves."
Overall, Ugly Love is another hit from Colleen Hoover that will leave your heart open and exposed to the myriad of emotions Tate and Miles' story will inflict upon it.
Their story will fill you with a desperation you never knew possible that these two will be able to get past the ugly side of love and realize that it doesn't have to be that way. Love can free as much as it can restrain....
