When she lost it all, Jess decided to cope by living a lie. But you can’t keep on pretending forever…

Twenty-one-year-old Jess used to have everything—a loyal best friend, a boyfriend she loved, and a future that was right on track. But in a single night, her whole world changed.

Now, Jess lives for the impersonal connection of drunken hook-ups and to-go coffee cups in the morning. All she needs is one night to pretend everything is fine…until she meets Adam.

Thanks to a sports injury, gorgeous, charming basketball star Adam Carson is stuck in physical therapy at the hospital where Jess interns—giving her the perfect opportunity to see his sweet, considerate nature and making her realize that maybe she does want something more.

But while Adam might be the best thing that’s happened to Jess in a long time, letting him past her carefully constructed walls means letting him know what happened...and why he'd never want her for more than one night.

It's books like this one that completely ruin me when it comes to men. Because Adam Carson is the ultimate folks. Sigh. He's pretty much my dream guy. He not only plays basketball, but he enjoys watching The Vampire Diaries, is drop dead gorgeous and oh so very patient. He really stole my heart which made me want to throttle Jess all the more for her shenanigans.

While Jess drove me a little crazy with her back and forth, I didn't overly dislike her character. I felt for her. She has endured a very tragic event and because of it she has lost a lot of trust and stability that her life once used to have. She copes by participating in drunken hook ups, becoming blissfully numb to the incredible loss she feels. I was happy when her and Adam's paths crossed, as he is just the kind of guy she needs in her life. She hasn't befriended many people, so watching her interact with him and her roommate Zoe was a big deal. Still, she could be incredibly selfish but at least she owns up to that and tries to make things better. Zoe calls her on that which is why I liked her character so much. She's quirky and a bit nerdy, but she's in Jess's corner and wants to have a friendship with her.

You already know how I feel about Adam from my opening paragraph. The guy is a trooper for putting up with Jess's crap and you have to give him kudos for sticking around when not many would. He is dealing with an injury and my heart broke for him because he just wanted to play basketball. He is realistic and knows this will be his last season but that doesn't make not playing any easier. I did really enjoy how comfortable he was with Jess. The two definitely have sparks flying and every time she friend zoned him I wanted to scream in frustration. I wanted them together and I wanted both of them to be happy. It's definitely not an easy road for them as Jess has some things in her life she needs to put to rest before she can truly move on with her life.

I ended up really enjoying this despite Jess's back and forth. I liked the storyline and watching these two fall for one another. Jess deserves happiness after everything she's gone through so I was happy when she finally decided to let Adam in. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

  1. honestly this and Adam sound like the perfect read! Jess would frustrate me so much too but sometimes that back and forth, while annoying, adds to the reading experience.. not sure if i'm really making any sense. I will definitely be adding this one to my tbr!

  3. I think I would end up really loving Adam! He sounds like a dream boat. But dang! That girl sounds like she's a bit of a mess. I would be so frustrated with her I think. Thank goodness she finally lets the poor guy in!
I'll have to check this one out.
    Great review, Jess!

  5. I have this one to read at some point, too! I'm not a huge fan of the back and forth, so that makes me a bit nervous. I guess time will tell how it works for me!
