Boldly Bookish Recap!
Hi guys! I'm so excited to bring you my #boldlybookish recap post today! I had such a great time at the Memphis stop!
For those of you that don't know, I was asked by Bloomsbury to moderate the panel, which consisted of Trish Doller (THE DEVIL YOU KNOW), A.C. Gaughen (LION HEART), Emery Lord (THE START OF ME AND YOU), and Tiffany Schmidt (HOLD ME LIKE A BREATH).
(From left to right: A.C. Gaughen, Emery Lord, me, Tiffany Schmidt, and Trish Doller)
I was able to meet with these wonderful ladies pre-panel and prep them for a few of my questions! It was also a blast to sit down and chat with these ladies. They truly are a blast to hang out with. Ellice from Paper Riot, also joined us! It was so nice to meet another southern blogger!
I started the panel off with a few getting to know you questions, to serve as a sort of ice breaker. The 3 questions were as follows:
1. What book would you walk through fire to save?
2. If you were forced to karaoke, what would your go-to song be?
3. If you could have dinner with any author (living or not) who would it be?
The authors' responses:
TRISH: Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta, Superbass by Nicki Minaj, and Jack Kerouac
EMERY: Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, Gettin' Jiggy Wit It by Will Smith, and Margaret Atwood
A.C.: (This was a hard question for her. She would probably go with The Diviners by Libba Bray, as she had an ARC), Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus, and Jane Austen
TIFFANY: Any of her Ally Carter books, You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile from Annie, and Louisa May Alcott
After the authors talked a bit about their books, I followed up with a series of questions, such as why they decided to write Young Adult and if they've ever thought about writing different genres. I loved hearing their answers and I love that they are all game for branching out!
Emery had written a few posts about why we need more flawed characters in Young Adult and I asked her to talk to the audience a bit about that and also asked the others to chime in with their thoughts as well. I loved how real these women are and they recognize the need for real characters in Young Adult. Teenagers are not perfect, so why should we read about ones that are?
I asked if any of the authors were interested in exploring any secondary characters and Trish admitted to liking the idea of writing about Charlie from SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL, Emery wouldn't mind writing more about Tessa from THE START OF ME AND YOU, A.C. is actually in the process of writing about a character that appeared in LION HEART, and Tiffany's next character in her HOLD ME LIKE A BREATH series is actually the one she wanted to write about!
When asked what they were working on next, Trish confides she is writing an Adult novel, Emery has written her fourth contemporary, A.C. has her first book in the Elementae series coming up called TERRA, and Tiffany has finished BREAK ME LIKE A PROMISE.
We then played Matchmaker Mashup, where the author must match up one of their heroines with either one of their other characters or one of the other authors' characters. I loved hearing who they chose!
EMERY would match up Dee from OPEN ROAD SUMMER with Ryan Chase from THE START OF ME AND YOU. Ryan is just one of those GOOD guys.
She would also like to match up Travis from Trish's SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL with herself. LOL.
TRISH would match up Cadie from THE DEVIL YOU KNOW with Charlie from SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL. Charlie has a good heart and is a good person.
A.C. reluctantly would match up Scarlet with Garrett from Tiffany's HOLD ME LIKE A BREATH. (I say reluctantly because let's be for real- Roblet is totally OTP!) Garrett is smart and awesome- Scarlet needs someone like that! She could also see Scarlet with Jonah from Tiffany's BRIGHT BEFORE SUNRISE. Jonah is a total jerk in the beginning, but he would be a good person to see through her BS!
TIFFANY would match up Penny from HOLD ME LIKE A BREATH with Little John from A.C's Scarlet series. Penny needs someone to listen to her- she's very smart, but not socialized. Little John would step up and be that person for her. She could also match Penny up with Max Watson from Emery's THE START OF ME AND YOU. He is a powerful listener and would be a good match for her.
We then did some Q&A with the audience where one member asked the authors how they dealt with the writers' block and Ellice asked them the strangest thing they had to research for their books. I loved those answers! Emery especially was cracking me up with her divorce, separation talk all while fearing her husband would get a hold of her computer and wonder if she was researching how to leave him. HAH! A.C had to research medieval torture devices that wouldn't kill someone (which was actually hard to find!), Tiffany had to research organs, and Trish had to research alligator eating habits!
Finally we did the signing and I was so excited to get the following books signed, chat with the authors one on one, and get pics with them!
With Tiffany Schmidt
With Emery Lord
With A.C. Gaughen
With Trish Doller
I also got to meet and chat with Courtney Griffin, the Children's Publicist for Bloomsbury!

That is so cool that you got to moderate and hang out with all of the authors. It looks like you had a wonderful time!
ReplyDeleteYou had such a fun time, Jess! Thanks for sharing your experience with you all. I want to hang out with Emery Lord. She sounds hilarious! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I can see why A.C Gaughen was hesistant about pairing up Scarlet with anyone else. Roblet is the one true OTP!!
The Boldly Bookish tour stop in Virginia was a blast, too! I'm glad you had just as much fun. It was great to see your photos. It's so cool you got to moderate! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! I wish I could have gone to meet all those authors. A. C. Gaughen is one of my favorites; you are so lucky to meet her. <3 By the way I messed up on the rafflecopter and it didn't get my email which is calilily1(at)verizon(dot)net.
ReplyDeleteI definitely loved the karaoke question. I was so not expecting that Trish would choose Superbass. Anyways, thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteSeeing pictures with authors is always interesting!
ReplyDeleteI loved the icebreaker questions :) One's go-to karaoke song tells quite a bit about a person!
ReplyDeleteI love the answers the authors gave and the pictures!
ReplyDeleteI get so jealous when I see readers and bloggers hanging out with authors. I wish I could go to these book events too. Getting to talk to authors is got to be awesome, and I'm pretty sure I'd fan girl and make a fool out of myself, but oh well. Glad you had a good time!
ReplyDeleteLeave me some comment love! And I will get around to commenting back!
My blog is an award-free blog, however, as I just do not have the time to follow-up.
