Surprises abound and sparks ignite in the highly anticipated, utterly romantic companion to My Life Next Door

Tim Mason was The Boy Most Likely To:
- find the liquor cabinet blindfolded
- need a liver transplant
- drive his car into a house

Alice Garrett was The Girl Most Likely To:
- well, not date her little brother’s baggage-burdened best friend, for starters.

For Tim, it wouldn’t be smart to fall for Alice. For Alice, nothing could be scarier than falling for Tim. But Tim has never been known for making the smart choice, and Alice is starting to wonder if the “smart” choice is always the right one. When these two crash into each other, they crash hard.

Then the unexpected consequences of Tim’s wild days come back to shock him. He finds himself in a situation that isn’t all it appears to be, that he never could have predicted . . . but maybe should have.

And Alice is caught in the middle.

Told in Tim’s and Alice’s distinctive, disarming, entirely compelling voices, this return to the world of My Life Next Door is a story about failing first, trying again, and having to decide whether to risk it all once more.

My Life Next Door is one of my all-time favorite young adult books. I absolutely adored the Garrett family, so I was ecstatic to hear that Tim and Alice were getting their own book! It is with a heavy heart that I admit that I did not love this one like I wanted to. It lacked that same spark I felt in My Life Next Door and I felt it was a lot heavier than I expected.

That's not usually a bad thing, because life throws us curveballs, but I just felt there wasn't enough romance for me and I felt like I missed the build up before the two were professing their love for one another. The moments we did have though, I adored and I was so happy that these two fell for one another. Tim hides behind his humor and I loved that Alice saw past that. I also liked that she didn't make their age difference or the fact that he is her brother's best friend this huge deal. They had enough of their own problems to deal with without adding in unnecessary angst.

Things are pretty hard for both Alice and Tim, as I mentioned above. Alice is still dealing with the aftermath of her father's accident from the first book and in turn has a ton of responsibilities heaped on her. She does them willingly- they are her family and she loves them and doesn't want to let them down. I admire her for her dedication and selflessness.

I wasn't crazy about Tim's storyline. I do think it helped him grow up, but I was a little irritated by how easily he accepted his fate, without question. He is a good guy and I loved that about him and he also exhibited some selflessness with his situation. While I could have done without that particular story arc, I am glad it was resolved the way it was in the end.

Even though I didn't LOVE this one, I did still enjoy it. It was nice to see Sam and Jase together, as well as catch up with the rest of the Garrett clan. They are such a great example of family and they really do prove that you don't have to be related by blood to be family. This was so important, as we saw in Sam's story and now in Tim's. They are far from perfect, but they are happy and they care for one another and that is what matters.

  1. I felt similarly about this one as well. It was not the love story I envisioned for Tim and Alice. I'm still reeling with the disappointment of this one! :(
I'm glad you liked parts of it though, Jess!
    Great review!

  2. Darn! This seems to be the general consensus about this book in the reviews I've been reading - people like it, but no one seems to love it. I was hoping for more!

  3. I FEEL YOU. OMG DO I FEEL YOU.
You pretty much summed up my feelings perfectly. I wanted this to have more romance, and I hated that Tim didn't question what he was being told. HELLO. A simple test, anyone?! It just seemed like Huntley was throwing in the most obvious angst. :/
But what we did get of the romance I adored... I just wanted way more.

    Great review, lady!

  5. Too bad you didn't enjoy this one as much as the first one. I've yet to read this series, but the premises sound great.
